Just picked one up at the flee market for 50 bucks and it seems to be nearly brand new...still has the instructions in one of the side pouches. It seems that this is a great stand...anyone have experience with them? if so what do i neeed to know as it is my first climber. How is the safety harness for it?

First climbing stand I purchased was this one from API several years ago. Loved the stand but so did someone else. You'll really enjoy it, especially for the price. New, I believe I paid around $249. Make sure you keep the top and bottom connected while ascending. Start with the seat at a sharp upward angle. Make sure you take it home each time you use it or someone may borrow it, permanently. Miss mine but I guess it's my own fault, even if I was on private property and had the thing locked to the tree. Has a tendency to make a lot of noise on a rough bark tree. Enjoy.

Great stand I have had one for a long time now .If you dont like it I'll give you 50 plus shipping for it .You have to practice with it ,it does take some time to get to know how two set it right for the tree your climbing .Never have it leaning forward ,leaning back is better .I keep one side of the chain set and just move the other side .I hold it on the tree and see what looks level then I'll go one more hole and try that .If you climb a tree and it's and it's not level or leaning back climb back down and adjust it .There great stands good luck be safe .

I love mine and have had it for a few years. There is a guy on AT that sells rubber tubing to go over the chain, definitely worth getting a pair of these. The plastic on there now won't last long!

thanks for the advice...ive already starting practicing climbing with it and have had a great beginners luck in keeping it level but i still suck at descending. And im not sure if i use one of the straps to tie the top and bottom together of if i use the shorter piece of like ten foot rope to tie it togther. Also, will the safety harness that came with it suffice to keep me safe or should i invest in a better one?

I've have two of these and like 'em. There comfortable to sit in for long stretches of time. Some times too comfortable. Wonder how many deer have walked past me while I was dozing. Some answers/hints:

  • Use the rope to attach the top and bottom sections

  • Yes the factory tubing will crack, replace it as needed to protect the chain from moisture and rusting

  • I took the foot rest/gun rest off to make it a bit lighter and easier to put the two sections together for transport

  • Both the top and bottom sections need to be attached initially at angle, so they are "level" at you 'destination sometimes at a pretty severe angle if the tree has a big taper from bottom to top you'll get used to guessing how much after doing some climbs

  • The API harness is good, although it can be a bit of a spiders web to untangle and put on

  • It not a particularly heavy stand to backpack but the factory shoulder straps makes it feel a lot heavier than it is. I picked up, on ebay, shoulder/hip harness based on military harness. This is a great improvement and is much more comfortable for walking in and out of your site

You're welcome. I really should re-read my posts and correct the spelling, grammar and punctuation

Also, make sure you use the ratchet strap around the tree on the seat section when you get in place. And I like to use small bungee cords (the one's with the plastic balls) instead of the web straps and buckles to fasten the two pieces together for transport. The bungee's (for me anyway) are a little faster make tight and put on and take off.

Tie the rope to the foot stirups to pull them up to get your feet in.

hmmm i dont know, it has two adjustable straps that are like riveted to the bottom platform that ive used for stirrups. could have just been something the previous owner used to do something for personal preference. So how imperative is it that I have the ratchet strap around the tree for the bottom section, couldnt i just used any small adjustable ratchet strap?b

Stupid me! I gave you bum advice. The bungee cord is not used for stirrups. The bungee cord is meant to go behind the heals of your boots to keep your feet from coming out of the strap stirrups.

Yep - any ratchet strap of suitable size will be fine. It does not have to be an 'API' strap.

yea i was pumped about the price...went lookin for one and only thing i was looking for and dang if it wasnt at the second table i got to however i had no clue exactly the steal that i was getting!

MikeE, no worries! i just was practicing in the back yard and my feet were coming out so that should help knowing that now. i prolly went about 15 foot high and it took me forever to do it but i had it kinda sloping down like you all said it shouldnt be so i will need to work on that for sure and my efficiency climbing with it

Great deal on a super stand. Does anyone know where someone can get an owners manual for the grand slam supreme. I bought one a couple years ago, although not for the steal you got, and it had everything but the instructions.
