A left handed shooting buddy asked me if I could fletch some left handed arrows. He insist that since he is left handed he needs left helical fletching and right helical wont work the same. How can I convince him otherwise? I don't even have a left helical clamp. I always though left helical was for shooting off the shelf on a left handed bows am I wrong?

Several books and articles have been written on the subject of right and left helical fletching and most all agree that as long as you don't mix right and left helical fletched arrows all is fine. What happens is a arrow corrects itself through the fletchings or vanes. A right helical will correct one way and a left helical will correct another way - this is the only real difference. Have him call N.A.P. 1-800-323-1279. NAP is one of the knowledgable companies going.

Most die hard recurve and stick bow shooters will stand by the right/left issue. I won't disagree with them as it's been years since I got serious will a recurve or stick bow. What some remember (I do) most recurve and stick bow shooters bought store bought arrows and, unless special ordered, store had only one kind, right hand fletched.

I have done extensive testing and I have proven nothing... or I should say I have proven that it makes absolutely no practical difference except:

  • longbow shooters shooting off their thumb.
A lefty shooter should shoot Right helical, a righty should shoot Left Helical. it hurts less

  • You are using screw in points and not using loctite.
LH may eventually cause your thresds to loosen/back-out.

Though I own a Right Left and Straight clamps, I only fletch Left Hekical for my personal and family use. Left Wing feathers used to be much cheaper than right wings and I recently purchased got box of 2,000 from TruFlight.

If you and/or your bud want to pay shipping I'll do them no charge.

Geez man! That's awful nice!

Isn't that what this is all about Archers Helping Archers?

It only takes me about an hour to do a dozen, no big deal at all...

I have the Bitzenburger jigs, clamps and just got at least a year's worth Flex-Flech's "Flex-Bond" and VaneTec's "VT-1000" adhesive.

I have LOTS of:
Norway DuraVanes 3" in Green or Blue
TrueFlight Left Wing 4" Round Back natural feathers: White, Black, Yellow or Blue.
Left Wing 3.5" Round Back natural feathers: red only

Sorry you cannot have any of my VaneTec or Flex-Fletch vanes. those are reserved for my competitive shooters.

Besides, I'll need a diversion from writing all these papers I have to do for English Comp-II, one 1,000 word essay per week plus a 6,000 word final.. UGGH!
