Hello,

Basically I finished my hunting bow upgrade this week when ordered a new sight:)

My next long term project is a target bow. Hopefully I can buy it latest mid of summer. For that I would make some research.

I am not a professional archer and want this bow for practice and for outdoor/3D competition just for fun.

I really like the Hoyt Stratos 40 with SVX cams (never shoot it because it is not available on stock in country). For this purpose 50 lbs should be enough but what happens if I want to use it as a hunting bow? (28.5/29 DL)

50lbs is the legal minimum here for big game hunting. The biggest game what I hunt is Red deer which is an Elk size animal, but the usually hunt for an other smaller size deer and wild boar.

If I use a heavy arrow (450gr +) with COC or quality fix blade BH is it enough for this kind of animals?

How noisy is a target bow/ is it noisier than a hunting bow? With this setup the speed will be slow but still ok if the bow is not really noisy I think. My current Hoyt CS 30 zt is really quiet with 550grish arrow and the speed never was an issue.
40 ATA is too long for hunting? (I have some friend who hunt with much longer trad without an issue so I think shouldn’t be too long but I am not sure)

I am shoot 3-5 times a week around 30 arrows per occasion at 65-67 lbs so if you say the 50 is too risky or low for hunting I can go to 60 just think 50 is more fun for practice and unfortunately I practice 1000 times more than hunt

Thank you in advance

As far as sound it really depends on how you setup your bow and the type of target bow you get. I've shot mostly C4 and had a Victory X. Both bows when limb silencers installed shot very quietly at 50-60 pounds. If you are hunting with a 50 pound bow I wouldn't go too heavy or it will take forever for your arrow to get there which gives the animal too much time to move. If it were me, I'd go 8-9 grains per pound on any bow under 55 pounds for big game.

I use a long ATA for hunting & set at 60#s. That being said, I "try" to do lots of outdoor tournaments & I like Field (112 arrows) & Target 900 rounds (90 arrows) the most. 3D the least of 30 or 40 arrows. I do all outdoor events set on 45#s.. 50#s for hunting, I see no problem as I also use a Longbow at times. It's 50#s & definitely not as speedy/efficient as any compound but more than capable of taking down any Deer, Elk or Bear I might encounter. How do I know? I've arrowed all mentioned with a 53# recurve with great results. ENJOY the 50#s as todays tackle is SO much more efficient. I do use an arrow hunting in the over 500 grns total arrow weight AND Aluminum shafts. In target, I use the lightest arrow I can safely get away with.. The 2016 NFAA

Target Nationals I shot with my older 60# Ex Pro Darton.. The 2015s 5 Day NFAA Field Nationals in Pa. I used my 50# Longbow.. Much tougher for sure at 112 arrows a day with fingers. My Orange one of a kind Harley 45# Darton Maverick is now my "all" outdoor bow.

Thank you guys! I want to use this bow for practice an fun the hunting is just an option. But I think if I will have a really good bow and will like to shoot why not hunt with them? :) I just asked because here most of the bowhunters say 60+ or even 70 for hunting and only a few use lighter bow. I made a questionnaire in my local bow hunting group and less than 25% use a bow under 60lbs ( 10% between 50/55 and 15% between 56-60).

In my mind more practice means more consistent shoot (hopefully smaller groups or higher scores and so on :) ) and lower poundage equals more practice for me at the moment.

If I have the bow I will come and ask about the arrow setup but until that I am happy with your answers. :)

In my 6 decades of archery/bowhunting I will give you a few things I have done. With Recurves/Longbows. !-45#s Complete pass thru on a Doe at 35 yds 2-40#s Complete pass thru Buck at 15 yds 3-Complete pass thru on Elk with 53#s @ 35 yds 4-Bear at 15 yds with 53#s. These were the light end. I arrowed 38 assorted Biggame with mostly 55#s or less & my favorite length was a 64" bow. Compounds-A whole lot of mixed bag Biggame & MOST Whitetails were with right at 55#s. Bigger critters like Buffalo (42 yds complete pass thru) & Elk were taken with 60#s (35 yds complete pass thrus x2). I've managed many a Whitetail with 55#s on the average. Hogs can be tough & of 16, only 1 was with over 60#s. My Daughter downed a Buffalo at 25 yds with 48#s, 1 shot & dropped in 60 yds.. Your Deer are

a heck of a lot smaller than that. Oh yes, it was an Aluminum shafted arrow with a 3 blade fixed. Enjoy that 50#s...
