In my younger days did a fair amount of baiting in Mn., Ws. for Bears. drive some of the dirt roads "looking" for Bear tracks or droppings (Scat) & lakes or streams with game trails. I liked being close to streams. It's lots of work but when I was young I really enjoyed it. Whatever you use for bait (what ever is legal) make sure it's in small pieces. Bears have a tendancy to carry off large portions & make their own bait station if the do't eat it all up. Anything extremly stinking to get their attention (I used whole rotten carp/suckers) & then a variety of things like sweets, fresh fish remains, bone & meat scraps, beaver carcus if you know a trapper (remember-check what IS legal for bait). Good Luck. I always started a bait with a huge amount & then, once it is hit with a smaller amount to keep them coming back. An advantage to baiting your own is scent-they will get used to your scent & when your there "waiting" be less alarmed. I truly believe EVERY BEAR knows the hunter is there with exception of very young ones. A big Bear may be traveling & only hit a bait once in a week but that is usually in the spring when they are looking for females. Good Luck & enjoy.
