What kind of steel do you need to use, could it be regular steel, or does it have to be stainless? also, what is the regular thickness that you would use, where can you get the material for the handles ( wood, pins). any tips will help.

Lots of questions :) Check out the noobie info on BladeForums or JerzeeDevil or KnifeDogs or Knifeforums... There's lots of forums out there that will guide you through it.

A quick answer is use a steel that you feel comfortable with. Yes, you can use stainless or high carbon steel for the knife. Regular thickness is arbitrary and usually depends on what the knife is for (1/8-1/4 is pretty darn typical). Look around on the forums (or online retailers like Jantz, USA Knife Makers Supply, etc...) for handle material (stabilized wood, micarta, G10, horn, etc...) and pins.

If you haven't looked at Squawsach's knife making tutorial it's one of the best out there. It gets recommended a lot around here as he's an AT member and it's a top-notch tutorial.
