Mar-den Mini-Max steel 100 grain

Plywood 5 points
Steel drum 3 points
Orange 4 points
Cutting diameter 4 points
Accuracy 5 points
Blades 2 points
Total score 23 with a blade sharpness ratting of B

The Mini-Max steel is a typical vortex head. It has two blades that swing open on contact with the target. It also has the trademark 7/8” exposed blade tips Mar-den heads are known for. The main difference in this broadhead and their standard aluminum, heads, is that the ferule is made of steel, with the body and tip all being one continuous piece. The cutting diameter is also 1 ½” compared to most of their other heads 2” plus diameters.
In the plywood test the Mini-Max steel busted through without any problems and only the slightest amount of bending in one blade. In the steel drum the head penetrated the first wall with the tip and half the body sticking in the back. One blade had broken off the very tip, while the other was still in excellent shape. On the broken blade most of the cutting surface remained. As with all Mar-den/Vortex heads the steel scored a 4 in the Orange test, as the blades begin to cut as soon as they make contact.
Overall this is another impressive head, the cutting diameter is modest compared to most of their standard line, and it should make an outstanding mechanical head for those who may be on the edge of what is normally recommend as far as kinetic energy is concerned for a mechanical head. It would also make a great head for those wanting mechanical accuracy but still prefer a modest cutting diameter.
The accuracy is excellent and the blade sharpness is very good. The body is practically indestructible and the blades are very tough and open quickly. If you want a two blade mechanical head that penetrates deep, still has a good size, cutting diameter, take a hard look at.
