Mathews v3 31 what a pain in the ***

My draw length is to long. I have been trying to find the correct amount of twist in the strings and cables to get the bow in spec and the draw length shorter. When I shorten the draw length to where it use to be it causes the draw weight to go out of spec and axel to axel to be shorter than 31inches. How the hell do you shorten draw length keep bow around 71 pounds and 31 axel to axel. Every twist in one piece causes movement in another. To get the cams timed and draw length where it use to be the poundage goes up to 73 or more and the axel to axel is short. I must be doing something wrong.

If you've shot it a lot and the string set continues to slide out of optimal tune....that is a primary indicator that the stock string set it not top quality. I've dealt with the same thing with my Elite Ritual 35 bows with stock Winner's Choice strings. They come pretty well set and tune up rather easily, but after a while they work out of optimal tune. So it is back to the bow press and draw board. I've had three of the same bow in the past two years and the same scenario has played out. The string set doesn't have to look worn or frayed or having serving issues to need replacing.....unless you like this revolving door?

My solution after the 2nd retune was ordering a set in X99 from Mike at Catfish Custom strings. Once in tune, they stay in tune and the effort is very much worth the cost....unless you can continue to put up with the twisting and resetting over and over. What you have "discovered" about twisting cables and strings is the reality of bow tuning....each adjustment has a greater effect on the system than just what you hoped to accomplish.

If you are not going to replace old set with new set, I would remove old set, measure and twist or untwist string and cables to factory specifications. Then adjust to your DL.
They may not show "wear", but if they are stretching, they are worn out. A 1/4" change in DL is a lot of stretch.
Buy a quality set and be done with it.

Order the correct mods. The MAX you should be trying to adjust a DL without changing mods would be 1/4” one way or the other. Either a 1/4” longer or 1/4” shorter. Nothing more than that.

Thanks everyone for your time. I spent hours adjusting everything. I'm going to try another session adjusting again before I spend money. I do know that twisting the string shorten the draw length but also moved timing so I had to twist cables on and on jacking with everything.

If you get the draw length and poundage you want, as long as ATA is within 1/4” or so leave it alone. With any bow, you can generally have exactly the DL and DW you want or you can have the ATA be exactly the spec number, but you can’t have both unless you just get lucky.

Also, don’t forget the options available with the limb bolts. You may need a mod swap depending on how picky you are (not that being picky is a bad thing, but it has its consequences).

I may be reading this wrong, but if you are trying to shorten the draw length and your poundage is increasing you are definitely doing something wrong... If you take twists out of the cables to shorten DL poundage goes down.... If you twist the string to shorten DL poundage goes down... Perhaps better details on exactly what changes you are making would help.

I have tried every combination I think. I have shorten the draw length back to what it use to be. But that makes the timing off off so I have to twist cables to get timing back. That increases draw weight and shortens a/a.

Update!!! I got the draw length close to what it was and similar to my other v3 31. Both are short of 31 A/a. Around 72.3 lbs draw weight. Timing exact in holes and on draw board. So I guess screw the a/a measurement. See how long this lasts before the string or cables stretch again.

If it’s a question of funds then adjust and play around with the original strings till you’re happy, you may be adjusting them constantly. If you hunt with your bow order new strings today as most makers get very busy the closer it gets to hunting season , lots of hunters leave it to the last minute the panic. Kind of like Christmas shopping lol.
