If it looked like greasy hamburger meat smeared all over your arrow without any blood, your arrow probably passed through the meat just under his hide. In this case, you will find very little blood, if any, and no blood trail. If this is the case, I'd guess you either shot high, or he almost completely ducked your arrow. It sounds like a classic flesh wound, in which case you won't find him dead, because he's not going to die from your shot. I hope I'm wrong, and you find him. You should still do a careful and thorough grid search. If you do find a good blood trail, that changes everything. Go get your deer and post the pics. At least if you don't find him or any blood trail, you'll have a chance to hunt him again, because he will be completely healed in time for the peak rut.

Yeah, I was probably writing my post when you posted about the white hair. Definitely a low shot then, since white is on the lower side of the deer. Sometimes brisket hit deer die; sometimes they live. It depends on how low. Did you every find a blood trail, or your deer?

Looks like your left and right was good, he may have string jumped and dropped on the shot. Nice to know you still have a trophy to go after. Deer are so freaking fast. I shot a doe standing broadside to me two years ago that spun so fast that the arrow hit her in the side and exited under her chin... killed her. Until I recovered her and looked at the wounds I had no idea she spun as I was sure I had a double lung.
