I scored an archery moose tag for this coming fall. The last time I got this particular permit was in the 90’s and prior to the mechanicals of today. Are the newest mechanicals robust enough to stand up an animal as large as a moose, with much heavier ribs than deer or elk. Last time I was successful using old tried and true Zwickey broadheads that passed thru the chest and impacted and broke a rib on the far side of the chest. He piled up about 75 yards from where he was first hit. I’m curious as to people’s thoughts.

Congrats on your tag.
I’d have all the confidence in the world in a quality mech on a moose. Wasp jak hammer , g5 dead meat , even the rage trypan nc , although it wouldn’t be my pick.

My father in law put a hurting on his moose with a grim reaper fatal steel. I've shot a few bull elk with the minimags and none went over 100 yards. Stick with an 1 3/8" or smaller cutting diameter and you will be good to go. Anything 1 1/2" or bigger will be pushing it IMHO for something like moose. I'm personally not a 2 blade fan, but I know a few people who swear by them. I just don't feel like I get the blood trail that a 3 or 4 blade does and I won't shoot a wide bladed head. I like my blades to be swept back quite a bit so they slice as they go through.

If you question it....why risk it?

Confidence in your gear goes a long way. If I was in your shoes, I would spend good money on some quality fixed heads (VPA/ Cutthroat) for an animal like that.

Ya might not want to drop that cash on whitetails but it may be worth it in this case.

I've shot a lot of mechanical heads with no significant failures so I'm not a mech hater at all.

I never shot mechanicals, because they do fail. Never had or even heard of a fixed failing.
Fixed heads fail
Slick trick razor the coc tip hit bone shoulder and bent over a deflected putting a 2 foot cut down the side.

My favorite head the Exodus did have a failure the nipple that holds the blades in had one break and blade fall out.

Found both of those deer also tho

Ever mechanical that has failed on me (rage and g5 ) they also resulted in found animals as well.

If you watch lusk broadhead testing you will see how many fixed heads fail before some mechanical do.

Killed a couple moose with 2” and 1.5” mechanicals if you put it in the right spot they shall fall quick. Can’t go wrong in a lot of choices now and days

I agree with this! Qad exodus has failed on me The one whole blade broke and the deer was broadside then exited the spine not sure how it was even possible but my wife got to see the whole thing and was blown away. Things happen! The titanic wasn’t suppose to sink……….

Personally, I mostly trust mechanicals on white tail deer. On whitetail I am increasingly feeling more comfortable with heavier fixed blades with a properly spine arrow. I absolutely would not chance any mechanical, I am familiar with if Moose was the intended target.

Everything you will have invested in the hunt Id be striving for a BH arrow combo that would have the best chance of offering success even if things were less than Ideal. Great time to be asking this type of question so you may work out the kinks between now and then.

I went moose hunting in Canada 25 years ago. I shot one at 78 yards with a 180 grain 300 win mag bullet and the bull just walked away like he got bit by a mosquito. I hit hit him again at 90 yards and he was unfazed. He just kept walking. He soaked up all that energy, was mortally wounded and still covered a hundred yards, after the second shot llike it was nothing. I can’t imagine doing it with a mechanical or even a bow and I am a huge, experienced archery guy. That trip would be epic. Have a plan for getting meat home. We drove so it was easy. One of the best trips ever, for sure.

Of course you could kill a moose with one. It is beyond me why in the world you want to use one. Being unable to get into close quarters seems rare with moose hunting so I really don't understand why you would risk it. Plenty of mechanicals are extremely tough, yet they all take a lot of pressure to push, and deploy blades compared to COCs. If I was going to spend the coin on a moose hunt, I would be using the best fixed blade money could buy. That would include, Iron Will, Day Six, or Valkyrie. If for some reason I just had to use a mechanical it would be the one from Evolution Outdoors with the steel ferrule.
