I'm looking forward to the MN Spring Turkey season opening up in a few weeks, but being new to MN, how crowded are the WMA's for turkey's? I've done some scouting, but its just hard to tell since I'm going about it alone and can't turn to my friends here since they don't hunt. Am I going to have to check out a large WMA like Carlos Avery and walk a while to avoid people? What should I expect and what's been your experience?

Im really looking forward to MN turkey season!! I love it!

Im probably not right by you but I think public is great for early turkeys! I have lots of private access but often hunt public the first couple weeks. Id suggest looking to counties with fewer tags for gun hunters. Early those publics can be full of turkeys and theres simply just not enough tags available for gun hunters to overcrowd them.

Genius! That's a great tip. I'm currently in St Paul and was able to do some research to find some areas with the fewest gun tags available to gun hunters near me. Kinda bummed the bag limit is only one for the spring season, but gotta be conservative. Hopefully I don't tag out the first day : ). All I've done lately is find myself watching Turkey Hunting Vids on youtube.... :darkbeer:

Swiffy is about as right as you can get. People usually stay away from the first 2 seasons because of the possibility of bad weather.....But this is Minnesota and I have hunted in a snowstorm in May and walked through drifts knee high in may.

I love hunting MN turkey. I can't tell you how hunting the WMA's will be. I've hunted next to public land during the week and didn't see a soul on the public land. I'm clear down in the SE portion of the state. I've usually hunted the last seasons where you buy an archery tag over the counter. I've killed turks as late as May 28th up here.

One trick to hunting the public land is to really study it. Find out if there is any access to the back portion of the area. Go in that way and let others push game your direction. Can't always be done. Another method down here is most of the public land has logging roads in it. Get out early so you can be in a good position as the sun just starts to crack and then listen for gobbling. Good luck

Thanks! This'll be my first year hunting turkey, so these tips are super helpful! I'm just glad MN gives bowhunters the entire season to try our luck. I actually don't mind the grunt work of putting boots on the ground and studying maps, so it'll be a fun next few weeks for me haha; I'm sure my GF is tired of me just talking about turkeys.

Just got a tip about some private land I may get permission on in the central region, so going to hop on that train to see if I can get in!

BTW: How do you like the Triax?
