Minus 33 Mid-Weight vs. Expedition Weight?

Looking at picking up one or the other soon and can't decide which. Only going to be getting the shirt. Can anyone give me any sort of idea of the difference in warmth. The mid-weight is almost $30 bucks cheaper, is it still very warm? Anybody got both or tried both that can tell me about which one you pick in certain temps? Does activity level matter? I do everything from all day sits in the 20's and 30's, to very long hard walks when duck hunting. For the average guy on a budget, is the expedition weight worth dropping $90 bucks just for the top?

Buy the midweight in your t-shirt size. You will not regret it. You can get two midweight shirts on Ebay for the price of one expedition weight shirt. I have cut out 2-3 layers since I switched to Merino wool as my base layer.... In the temps I hunt (35-65) here is my system:

No wind and 35-65°:
-minus 33 midweight top/bottom
-microtex pants and shirt
-windshear berber vest
-berber jacket (no windshear)
-first lite beanie/gaiter
-smartwool socks (foot spray)
-400 gram boots
*I add a second layer of merino wool bottoms if the high is 45° and little/no wind

With wind and high less than 40°:
-2 layers of midweight merino wool
-microtex shirt (or fleece hoodie)
-berber windshear vest
-berber windshear pants/jacket
-hand muff
-smartwool socks (foot spray)
-400 gram boots
-first lite beanie/gaiter
*use Arctic shield beanie and boot covers for long sits with high temps in the 20's

This is a low profile, quiet, and warm layering system.... and I grew up in Florida and get cold easily

Don't mean to high jack the thread but I was wonder about the same thing. Would the mid weight work for layering under fleece. I have been looking at a mid weight Minus 33 layer to wear under my Scent Lok Clima Fleece layers when it gets colder. I figured the expedition weight would be too heavy to layer.

Two mid weight layers are 100 times better than one expedition. Midweight is extremely versatile, and like someone else said you can get two midweights for the price of one expedition weight if you shop around.

I have both and rarely ever use the expedition weight. Honestly I could go with out it completely and not be any worse off.

Basically, if I could do it over... Instead of two mid weight sets and an expedition weight set I'd much rather have 3 mid weight sets and one light weight set. (Fwiw one mid weight and one lightweight set is better in all degrees than one expedition weight set)

I will be different. I use my expedition weight quarter zip top a lot for layering and as a outer layer. I also don't go into the woods without my light weight stuff. I was wearing my light weight stuff in TX 2 weeks ago when it was in the high 90's and humid.

I wear merino almost year round. The lightweight stuff is awesome in a screaming hot kitchen (I'm a chef) during the summer, really helps to keep me cool and dry for the most part. In another couple weeks I'll break out the mid weight and it will be on all winter long. A lot of people don't realize how great it is even when it's hot out. It's not just for the cold!
