We should be aware of the fact that as hunters we are quite often the discoverer of human remains out in the wild as we walk the areas where perpetrators often dump their victims. I believe we could discover unusual items out there that are "out of place" so to speak, as well as human remains, more frequently than we do and serve our fellow man in this way. Clothing or bones one can't identify should be reported to the police immediately.

Let us post missing persons and the areas they were last seen here then keep our eyes peeled.

I heard a news story this past winter about 39 yr. old Mary Denise Lands. Mary went missing from the area of Walden Ponds Apartments in the Marshall Michigan area March 12, 2004. She was last see wearing blue scrubs. This is a link to the MI State Police Missing persons sight and the page devoted to Mary Lands. http://michigan.gov/msp/0,1607,7-123...6405--,00.html
P.S. I had posted this in the Campfire but thought it would be seen by the right readers more here.

I guess 28 years in police work has kind of taken its toll.

here are some tips since i am a cj student who just finished forensics

if you come upon remains do not touch anything

try not to disturb the area in any way some types of evidence may still be viable

if yolu have any rope on hand place it 15 to 20 ft out from the remains in a circle or as beest as you can do to create a perimeter

and write down what ever you did in the area from the moment you found the remains till the authorities arrive

again dont touch anything

and you initial veiw of the remains you need to remember as many details as you can and write those down

what you saw may help the authorities gather a key peice of evidence
so remember averything you saw

just a few tips to help the authorities solve the crime :attention :attention

About 34years ago .I found a 18 year old girl that had just ben murdered that day . A friend and I were out scouting and I found her .We ended up at the police station intill about 2:30am the next day . They caught the couple that killed her . She left work with one of them . When they started asking questions she cracked. Some night's I can still see her laying there .

It's the living I run into in the woods that tend to cause the most problems.

I agree with everything you said except roping off the area. That is the last thing you want to do,,,,walking around the scene(within 20 feet) That is a big NO NO......

You come across human remains, back out of the area. If you dont think you can leed authorities back to the scene then try to mark the trail.

As soon as you can get to a phone dial 911. alot of cell phones now have built in GPS and enhanced 911 can pinpoint where you are located. This is not always true depending on where you are at, but if the area has it it will be nice.

This thread reminded me of the guy who said that he captured and elderly lady on his trail camera in her night gown in the middle of winter. The creepy part was it was at night and the camera was several miles from any homes.
The guy said that he checked his camera every 2 weeks and the photo was at least a week old, he passed it on the authorities.

Sticky this? It all seems like common sense to me. I don't go into the woods looking for anything but Ol' Mossy Horns, but if I see human remains while I am hunting I am not going to dig them up and try CPR.:pukey:

I don't think we need to be concerned about whether or not a sportsman would report finding a body, Doc. The point I was making is that what looks like a bit of trash or animal bones in the woods could be something that would break open a cold missing person case.
