Missouri Archery Permit Questions

Sorry if I am asking a stupid question, but I'm new to post here and couldn't find an answer elsewhere when searching the forum. Mr. Meanie and I have been debating this, but we have yet to come to any conclusion.

I understand that one Missouri License/Hunting Permit/whatever you wish to technically call it is all inclusive for Archery. That being said, we did not see anything on our license to indicate anything other than deer or turkey is allowed. It is clear in both the Missouri Spring and Fall Hunting Regulations books that one license permits the archer to take whatever they choose as long as it is in season for that animal. (Paraphrasing, so pardon the broadness of that statement.) Should there be something in our booklet/license we received when purchasing our deer tags to indicate this? What if I wanted to hunt, say rabbit or squirrel or groundhog? The regulations book indicates limits, but nothing is in our license booklet to indicate you have taken any specific number. So how would MDC even know you hunted them? Honor system?

I'm a totally new hunter as of 2014, so this is all a bit overwhelming for my poor wittle pea brain sometimes. I've lost count of how many times I've read the Spring and Fall Regulations books front to back. I did manage to take my first deer this year, and I do believe I am now hooked. If only I could understand the seemingly contradictory government speak in the rule book, I'd be good to go. :embara:

If you were to hunt small game (squirrel, rabbit) you would need a small games permit. Then you would look at the acceptable methods for harvesting small games, which archery falls under I believe. As for the turkey, the fall has an archery turkey tag that is included when you buy your archery license, because there is an archery only season then. In the spring you just buy a "Turkey Tag" that you can use either gun or archery with. If I'm reading your questions correctly.

Welcome to AT!

i thought that when you had the archery tag you were given the permission to hunt small game,

limits is just like fishing, honor system and dont get caught breaking it.

from MDC website
http://mdc.mo.gov/hunting-trapping/...g/regulations/deer-regulations/2014-archery-deer-and-turkey-hunting-regulations

Resident Archer's Hunting Permit
For two deer and two turkeys during archery deer and turkey season, for small game during prescribed seasons, and to sell furbearers taken by hunting

Nonresident Archer's Hunting Permit
For two deer and two turkeys during archery deer and turkey season, and for small game, except furbearers, during prescribed seasons

so they are slightly different for resident and nonresident

so like anything else, keep your tags with you and it would appear its legal to take small game with your archery deer tag, although if you have any question the MDC has always been pretty quick at responded to requests for information, could always ask them just for peace of mind

Hey Landon,

I was under the assumption that archery tags will state on the tag the game you can take without having to buy another license (small game, furbearer). Now if you have a small games license you could take a rabbit. Or if you have a furbearer you could shoot a coyote or bobcat. But then it has to be in a season/weapon that is legal at that time. I hope I'm making sense and I'm speaking from an in state point of view. Out of staters they might be required to buy those anyway??

I know in KS I have a life time license, so I just by an any season/any deer tag. My bil has to specify season for his tag as well as buy a hunting license.

I think the best answer would be if you are going to be taking these types of animals, just contact the MDC and ask, they are friendly enough to answer the question.

the MDC website does state though that you can take small game during the season and they do not print an additional tag, so if you kept a archery deer/turkey tag on your person then you should be good?

if you look up rabbit hunting on the MDC website, it will show the different valid permits that allow you to take rabbit

including "archer's hunting"
and rabbit season is Oct through Feb, so if you're in the deer stand after the rabbit season starts you can shoot a rabbit with your bow using your deer tag as your small game permit.

same thing if you look up coyote, valid permit to hunt coyote is "archer's hunting"
sitting in your stand see a coyote? shoot it
