I love hunting elk in the morning when the moon sets about 7 am, because you can see well earlier and the elk are still running around. Those nocturnal call shy ones dont seem to mind coming in as much. Just dont let them come in too fast or you wont quite have shooting light. Also go back out real early for evening hunt. Be where you want to hunt by about 2:30

GENERALLY you will get your best animal activity periods for the days surrounding the full and new moons. it never dictates whether or not i am going to be in the woods but that is your answer. on full moons i will hunt hogs with my bow. i can see 100yds in both directions on a clear full moon in fall winter and even use binoculars. but you really have to shoot instinctive because it is really dark. really just another reason to hunt.

I hate, repeat HATE a full moon, especially when it falls during the first-middle part of november like it did last year. I just dont see the deer on a full moon. All the other moon phases are OK. A new moon is probably the best, especially during a period of high pressure after a front as moved through, especially during the rut.. Get all these things to hit at the same time and hold onto your hat, its gonna be good hunting.

yea some say the deer move all night during full moon and nothing during day. BS. just change your pattern too. deer pattern you just like you pattern them so change completely. on full moon hunt 11am-3pm. sleep in and bring your lunch. you will be home for dinner with dinner!!

I do believe the moon has an effect on critters. But whether the moon is full, half-moon, 3 days before or after, this ole boy is going to have is butt in a treestand somewheres regardless.

Hey man I'm just telling you what I've observed in 9-10 years of hunting, not saying they dont move, they just dont move as much in the daylight hours in my opinion, because they move more at night, not necessarily all night.

I tried following the major game feeding periods that were based on the moon phases but everytime a major feeding period occured, I got so hungry I had to go home!

hey man im just telling you what ive observed hunting from 11am-3pm in 9-10 years of hunting and sharing with others an opportunity and a reason NOT to hate, repeat hate the full moon time. i dont sleep in i hunt all day long and never come down no matter what the phase or weather or rut or whatever. if i am hunting it is all day during legal hours. i wasnt saying you said that or bs to what you said. just sharing knowledge as you did. i was agreeing that many people feel the same way you do due to no success during this time. i was saying bs to the statement of deer not moving during a full moon which i put in my own post. my experience from 11-3 during a full moon is just as good as any other. (except morning and evening hunt time on full moon days). whew that can get confusing to write and clarify.

hotshot88-i certainly was not disputing or calling out your experience. just adding my own success plan during this moon phase in retrospect to many that share your experience.

In my opinnion and experience, a full moon is the toughest hunting. In 28 years I've killed 6 of my 48 deer on a full moon or within three days before or after and they were all killed between 9:00 am and 12:30 pm. For all 6 it was lightly raining and the barometer was very close to 30 (moving toward 30). I think when it is clear and moonlit deer do move more at night, they move durring the day, but not as much or as far as normal. I think weather (precip, baro, wind, temp, ect.) plays a way bigger role in when or how much deer move than the moon. I believe the barometer is a way over looked-factor. Of my 48 deer, 37 of them were killed when the barometer was moving toward 30 (up or down). Light rain is good too (21 deer killed in light rain). Things may be different for others, but I keep really good records and this is what I believe.

ringy your experience speaks volumes. maybe you could make a post if you had time showing some of your records. patterns and trends are interesting to track from year to year and across the country in different areas. what type of info do you keep records on etc. that is some valuable info.

A couple of years ago I got all into the monn theories & read a couple of books on it & purchased the dial tools. The funny thing is I still had the best of luck at seeing bucks at the same time I always did. I also have found that the rut is very predictable in my area & rut activity seems to happen at the same time each year regardless of the moon. At one time I thought it had some merit & it may still have but I no longer worry about it when planning a hunt. I still havn't made my mind up fully but I am leaning more to the side of it not impacting deer like some people claim it does.

Ringy I agree with some of your findings. I think weather has a more direct impact on deer than the moon ever would.

All I know is, the moon is full, the moon is dark, the moon comes up and the moon goes down. Deer are deer and you can't kill one by reading and listening to charts and weather reports. Hunt every chance you get and your odds will go up.

What he said! Nothing is absolute, and I am still in the woods regardless of these factors. However, I agree with your assesments on the moon, barometer and rain. I would throw in the related weather factor of temperature. I have found heat is a rut suppressor.

This is what I use

Works great and it works right on the head.

Easy to carry and read. Never go a season without one. Me and my friends have compared this to how the deer in his pen move around. If theres a A day on this moon guide Im in the woods. His deer will be up and feeding.

Weather and other factors to factor in as well. I use the moon guide when choosing days off to hunt. Harvested a few deer in the middle of the day due to that was the major times that day.
