Gooday fellas I was wondering if I could anyone could point me in the right direction? I live in Australia and I would like to take a trip to Canada to hunt Moose or Elk. As I have never hunted overseas before I would like some info on the best way to approach my adventure ie: can someone advise me on who would be a good out fitter or outfitters to approach, equipment required, minimum pondage etc? Is there some sort of course or licence I need before I can hunt best time of year etc? I am not a trophy hunter so I am just happy to go out and hunt with no trophy expectations. Thanks in advance Rinaldo

All info welcomed.

From my understanding the only place you will hunt elk in canada is behind a fence. Don't know if this is 100% fact or not but that's what I've heard from different people that have looked into it.

Lots of good moose hunting in canada just about any providence will suit your needs I believe.

If your looking for a fair chase hunt I would look to states Like Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho or Montana. They have good herds, tags are either over the counter or draw ratios are high for non residents.

Either species you will need a good pair of water proof optics, boots, raingear and a good pack. The best month for elk would be Sept. and for Moose would be the rut which I belive is Oct. - Nov.

There is free range elk hunting in the Province of British Columbia and there is also good moose hunting there. Talk to some sporting consultants and see what they can recommend (Shoshone Wilderness Adventures is supposed to be a top notch consulting firm).

Cant tell you what to do but if you lived in the states I would say moose because the lower 48 in the US doesnt have many. Now as far a good solid hunt, I think elk would be more fun. Elk bugling and running in to you is just a ton of fun!

If you hunt Northern British columbia you can hunt Moose , elk and caribou. sheep goats and wolf and also black bears all in the same area. You have to go with a licenced outfitter.

Also this one in the Yukon is great for moose.http://www.huntbpo.com/

All of this counrty is great . And in BC there are no fenced hunts for elk. Here in bc it is against the law to have elk in captivity.

Pm me if you want more info.

Big nine outfitters is a good out fit. For BC the regulations say 40 lb bow is minimum but I would recomend more. The broad heads must be 7/8" or wider. There are also outfitter in the southeast part of BC that are good for elk but not as good for moose.

What part of Oz are you from?? live din Adelaide as a kid

I am looking at a guided elk hunt in the Omineca unit 7-23.
Have you heard anything about the elk population in that area?
I am checking references but do you know a good way to check out a Canadian Guide?
Also there are bunch of bears including grizzly. Should I pack a pistol or would that just make them mad?

Thanks
Dave

elk/moose

Well, you should consider doing both at the same time. The elk rut is early September and the moose rut is the last week of sept/1st week of oct in Alberta. You can find a guide to do both. Why not take the extra time since you may never get a chance to do it again. I don't have any recommendations for you as I hunt both myself w/o any guides. British Columbia offer excellent moose hunting and elk as well. The same applies for there and why not do both. You can start by contactinf FISH AND WILDLIEFE in either province and they could probably give you a couple of recommendations for reliable outfitters [as they would definitely know of the non-reliables!!!!].
As for the fellow above from Great Falls, Montana- being only 3 hrs south of Alberta, I can't believe you could even state that elk are only found in fences here. This is one case where if you don't know what you're talking about, maybe don't be posting guesses. Will HUPPERTZ shot #3 elk in the world with a bow last year in Alberta and he would never hunt in a fenced in area. Oh yeah, our whitetails also reside outside of fenced in areas.
