Hey guys, I’m trying to figure out what the best avenue is for the remainder of this summer and my shooting/scouting opportunities. We have a little under two months to go before the whitetail season starts here in MN and I’m sure a lot of you guys are gearing up to get back to the great sport of hunting we all love, too. This summer has sucked in terms of weather and bugs. We’ve had constant rain and a lot of heat/humidity. I went into the woods tonight to check my trail cameras and probably had, with no exaggeration, around 50-100 mosquitoes near/on me. I’ve done some prior research and have heard good things about Thermacell, but a lot of what I’ve read says that it really only works when you’re sitting still. I figure this would probably work enough to shoot, but what about walking in the woods? What do you do to combat bugs? I know mosquito spray works but I try to kind of remain scent free in the woods as to not alarm deer of my presence. Does this not really matter in the summer? My only concern would be pushing the more mature deer around.

It’s honestly kind of been ruining something I really enjoy. I only have limited time with working full-time, like most of you I’m sure, and I’m about a month away from starting college classes again. Time is sparse and I really want to shoot my bow more often. I like shooting in the evenings but that’s when the bugs are the worst. I don’t have an indoor range local to me and with fuel prices, it isn’t really worth commuting far in my opinion. I like shooting long range and have changed some things in my setup (i.e., a new sight, release and arrows), and I want to really get comfortable with them prior to the season. I also have a new saddle I want to utilize this fall. Thanks for reading this and thanks in advance for any advice. Have a great day!

I use a thermacell when shooting & works well, when walking to & from target I don't bother & in the woods long sleeve shirt & long pants.

My clothes are treated with permethrin for ticks which also helps some with mosquitoes. I was getting eaten alive walking up a steep hill when it was hot and humid before daylight. Attaching the thermacell to the front of the pack strap kept them off me on the slow climb. It also dispersed all the flies and mosquitoes when gutting a deer by laying it on the ground on the upwind side

I have hunted the swamps in SC for hogs and deer and as military vet have been all over the US and it's the worst I have seen. So bad I bought a bug tamer suit in the 90's and the guy that invented it lived in SC. It worked but it was hot........you could wear shorts under it that helped but it was hot either way.

Then the Thermocell came out in what 1996? or so? Anyway a guy had 2 and let me use one and it's a LIFE changer..........period. It worked so well I tuned it off because I thought maybe since I'm elevated, not walking in the grass etc now they won't find me. NOPE! Tuned it back on asap...........lol

Now I stand hunt and in SC the winds are very calm most days at sunset and sunrise so it works like a charm. Never tired it any other way. But even on windy days if the wind is blowing it blows the skeeters away and then when the wind dies your little Thermocell smoke stream is right back there going it's job.......so even on windy days it works.

If you stalk I'm not so sure how it would work but I don't use it that way so I love mine.....nothing else needed. Mosquito free since 1997. For me only two things have changed hunting for me drastically.........the T-cell and hand warmers.

I use the Ranger Ready repellents. The have a scent free line. Picaridin for the skin and Permetherin for our clothing. Works incredible well.

Here in SC, the mosquito is our state bird. Lol! I never go to the woods without my Thermacell. Typically, mosquitos aren't too much of a problem after our first hard frost (mid-to-late November) but we had a warm winter last year and I had to use it into early December because the mosquitos were still out in full force.

Long shirt and pants and Muck boots while scouting at any time of the year, Thermacell while in the yard shooting. Can’t say the Thermacell works 100% of the time for me though for whatever reason. I actually have the Sitka Guard Hoodie arriving in the mail today, which will be my new scouting shirt to prevent getting torn up by mosquitoes.. I’m always in thick/thorny stuff so hopefully it’ll hold up alright. I skipped out on the pants as I use First Lite Sawbuck brush pants and spray the hell out of them with permethrin before most scouting trips.

More of the same. Maybe 15 years ago we had a wet, unseasonably hot late September and by our October 1st whitetail opener it was truly awful in the woods. I was visiting my hunting buddy and he said he could see me wacking and scratching across the woods with leaves up the first night. So he dug out his spare Thermacell and schooled me on the use. Like DQ mentioned earlier, I thought maybe it was just a calm morning for skeeters so I turned the Thermacell off for 5 minutes.....NOPE.....right back on it went. It has been a God-send several times spring turkey hunting and the first week of deer season. I have two and keep one in my bow case both spring and early fall.....along with refills.

I'm very recent to Sawyers Permethrin......as in spraying a pair of jeans for the first time yesterday to wear checking trail cams this morning. Ticks have not been a big issue for me, so I guess I've been lax about it. Then last Friday I checked a couple cams and found a tick embedding in my left forearm Saturday morning. NOT the way I wanted to start the weekend. A different hunting buddy has used Sawyers for years on his spring turkey hunting leafy suit and camo, so I immediately got on Amazon to place an order. When I got home I checked myself and outer clothing over well and didn't seem to have any uninvited "guests" along this trip. I'm planning on doing my shoes, sox and a T-shirt for my next pre-season cam trip.

I also live where the state bird is the mosquito. Went scouting this morning from 7:00-9:00, and had to reapply deet bug spray 3 times from sweating and the skeeters were terrible as normal. I also spray my clothes with permethrin for ticks, but haven’t found it to help with skeeters. Thermacell wouldn’t have done much while scouting but is a must have sitting in the stand.

I figure I’ll do a mass reply in case I don’t get a chance to reply to everyone! Thank you all for the responses! Today, I actually went to Scheels after work and picked up a Thermacell and used it to shoot tonight. For the first time in probably two weeks or more, I finally felt like I was able to get a solid shooting session in. It definitely does wonders and it doesn’t smell as strong as I figured. I will get the earth scented ones a try before the season just to see what I think. All I can say is it has been a game changer for me and I look forward to trying it out this season hunting. I also am excited to finally rip my saddle out of its box and use it! It’s time!
