Today I decided I am going to order some Iron Will heads for the upcoming archery season. It got me to thinking about the cost of one of these arrows I built for hunting.

Victory Vap SS Elite shaft =$21.50
Ethics deep six insert and end caps = $7
Bohning F nock = $0.79
Three Bohning Heat vanes =$0.75
Iron Will 125 grain Single Bevel = $40

That makes each of my hunting arrows $70.04!

Never in million years thought I would spend that much money on a single arrow. Haha, hope my wife doesn't ask how much the arrows in my quiver costs. That would be $420 for six arrows.

Man the places out hobbies will take us a re a little crazy.

A $20.00 arrow or $70.00 arrow isn't going to kill them any deader! That Iron Head will not kill them any deader than my Rocky Mountain Razor 4 blade & I believe only paid $12.50/6 pak as was one of Barrier top distributor's & in the last 50+ years have killed a ton of animals with them & still have 9 dz. left.

I understand that for sure. For most of my life I have been on the poor side. These last few years I have been fortunate enough to make a high enough salary to afford nicer things. The Vap SS were to experiment with a micro shaft. The collars were to add support at the front end, and the Iron Will is because I don't think I will find a stronger ferrule for a deep six single bevel head.

I have other arrow shafts that are much cheaper haha, and they shoot just as well. Broadhead and all, they are like $23. Those arrows shoot fine.

That's why I use bushings or nock end protection on all my arrows.
I like to shoot groups, and they are definitely worth the protection they provide.

If I thought I would gain something from it.... Yep, I would absolutely pay that. But, even my target arrows are ~ $50 less than that.

I put together some Black Eagle deep impact shafts with Iron Will 50gr inserts, 25gr collars and 125gr single bevel broadheads. 1st time using micro arrows, love them, don't want to dwell on cost each because it was excessive. Next arrow build will be standard size with gold tip components and may still utilize the Iron Will heads since they should last a good bit.

It's really crazy how quickly the price of an arrow adds up, shaft, vanes, lighted nocks, broadheads, etc. I quit using lighted nocks as they got expensive, plus I seemed to be more accurate with a regular nock. I've changed my hunting arrow setup for the last few years, but this year my hunting arrow is right around $17 each. Easton Camo hunter, Vanetec vanes, Bohning nocks and a Muzzy Black Hornet broadhead.

One thing I do find funny about people in general is where they are willing to spend money and where they aren’t. Seems like
some folks would happily spend $2k+ on a bow setup and then faint at cost of a premium arrow build.

To those people out there, do you also cheap out on the tires for your Ferraris and decked out trucks? 😂

More power to you OP, have fun with it!

I would agree to a degree. I think the quality of components does matter but vanes and the shaft in general are not as important as we think. I spend the extra money personally so that I can never blame my equipment for the failure.

70$/ arrow is out of my pricepoint. My arrows are used as disposable items that I fling with abandon at squirrels and also are my deer, pig arrows. I would cry if I lost one, let alone the 2-3 dozen a year I lose on squirrels…

I get my Victory Vap SS Elite Arrows for $160 a dozen
Lighted nocks $52 bucks a dozen
Qad exodus 30 bucks a pack when on sale.
I still have to fletch them
Inserts have been doing really good with no wobble shooting into the 450fts crossbow target.
Since I switched to golf shaft epoxy
Haven't decided on if I am going to upgrade inserts or just buy another dozen.
The arrows are worth the money to me.

I am replacing my arrows this year after not shooting ( injury) for three years. Even before then, I had not had to buy arrows for quite a few years. My old V-Forces just never broke. I still have 15 of the 24 I bought who knows how long ago.

Imagine my shock ordering 1/2 dozen VAP TKO shafts, wraps, and FOB's with longer nocks to clear them for new hunting arrows. Add in 6 standard VAP arrows with glue in points to "try out" before stocking up for another decade. I ended up having about $250 into just those. Thank fully I still have a dozen good Magnus Buzzcuts and as many F-15's (old mech head that should be more popular) so I don't need those.

Not as bad as yours, but for the most likely part to be replaced, it is quite a pinch. I have to buy new jigs and saw to start fletching my own stuff again.

Yeah, funny I was thinking about this right before our opening day in Ga for turkey season. The calculation on my arrow is roughky $55. The next day (opening morning) I punched a Tom on video and witness my XImpact snap like a twig. I was able to recover the broadhead, FOCOS outsert, and Nocturnal, so I didn't feel like it was a total lost. Lol.

That arrow broke on a turkey, or after the turkey?

i built some bishop steelfooted crossbow bolts and arrow shafts for a guys just 3 of this individially ran over 2200. 1800 dollars for 6 heads then paid $200 for the line budge pass during covid. only to not like his trajectory. out of the tenpoint xbow it was kind of cool. we managed to tune heads to a ravin i didn't trust shooting a bolt and the mission xr shot em fine too.

What makes you think they don't shoot well? Just because I chose to buy some more expensive arrows does not automatically imply I can't shoot.

I try to avoid these exercises for fear of what I'll discover.

I think it’s more of a want vs need. If just hunting white tails I feel as though that setup won’t offer any advantages over arrows and heads much cheaper. May stick them in the dirt farther after a pass thru that’s about it.
