So I’m new to bow hunting and got my first this year. He was a good buck but I didn’t get a pass through. I am using muzzy 3 blade 100 grain. I’m shooting at 55 lbs due to shoulder surgery’s. Have looked at other broadheads but am not sold on expandable. Are the muzzys good to keep running or should I consider something else?

I failed to get a pass through using a variety of broadheads (Muzzy, Carbon Express, Toxic, etc). My bow was at 66lbs. My cousin suggested adding weighted inserts to increase overall weight and FOC. I added 100 grains (450gr total). I get consistent pass through on deer. I have not had the same results with boar.

Congratulations on successful 1st season. As eluded to your less than stellar penetration may be caused by many factors.
Would like hear more details on your shot that lead up to the less than penetration experience. Glad to see you asking the question now & hopefully putting in the time to improve your set up & tuning your arrow flight.

Question for the op. Under what circumstances do you wish to experience improved penetration?
Examples may include on perfect broadside shot with perfect arrow flight & perfect shot placement.

Or perfect arrow flight, less than perfect shot placement due to the reaction of the deer at the shot.

or you ofter the scenario.

What we may be getting at is while the broad head can make a difference. Clean, true arrow flight will make a difference as well. Perhaps more so!

If you are willing id recommend studying up on the benefits of arrow tuning, sharp cut on contact broad heads, high front of center weight distribution & momentum. The time is right to start digging deeper for next seasons path to success.

I have used muzzy for 15 yrs and only thing I’ll shoot! The only thing is I may have to clock them to hit same as field points which isn’t a big deal! They work!

Thanks for all the reply’s. All my heads are brand new and razor sharp. Both broad heads and field points hitting in same place. I’ve researched and tuned the best I can. My closest pro shop is well over an hour away so I haven’t gotten into them to get a true tuning. As for shot placement, no issues there. I have been a rifle hunter for over 10 years and understand placement. I have killed both deer I have hit and both dead with in 50 yards of impact. I haven’t gotten in to arrow weights and all. I shoot the mossy oaks from Walmart. 350 spine.

I shoot Muzzy three blade, 125 grain heads out of one of my recurves, mounted on a 2016 aluminum arrow. I draw to just under 47 pounds. This combo works great for deer. My finished arrow is over 10 grains per pound of draw weight. Muzzy are great broadheads. Been around since 1984. Don’t over think it. Your not always going to get a pass thru. Arrow flight is the most important.

The total power depends on your draw length and the bow IBO. Some people shooting 55 lbs have as much power as some shooting 60 or more, depending on draw length and bow IBO. If you have a real short draw length and a lower IBO bow you would have to shoot 70 lbs to match someone with a high IBO bow and long draw length at 55 lbs.
