With this bow still being new and not many out there yet, I figured I would put together a short review now that I've had enough time to spend with the bow to figure it out a little bit. I'm reviewing this bow as a 3D/Target bow, not a hunting bow. So I won't be touching on vibration/hand shock and noise.
This bow is being compared in large part to the Chill X and probably for good reason because of similar specs. The bows are completely different.
Here's some string angle info in comparison to the chill X
Halon X:
ATA at brace 34 15/16"
ATA at full draw 31 3/8"
Outside of cam to Outside of cam: 39 3/8"
Outside to outside at full draw: 36 3/8"
Chill X
ATA at brace 35 1/4"
ATA at full draw 31 3/4"
Outside to Outside 41"
Outside to Outside at full draw 36 3/4"
My Halon X was ordered in #70 and 29.5". 75% modules. Out of the box it drew 74lbs and drew 28.25" to the throat of the grip. I've set it to 67lbs now and I'm holding a touch over 18lbs.
The new cam system feels awesome. The draw cycle is very nice. You pull most of your weight in the first part of the draw cycle which is nice. There's no big humps throughout the draw. It draws similar to the NoCams but it's stiffer at brace. It has the same general smoothness throughout though.
The bow tuned up really well. They sent a shim kit with it so I was able to fine tune very easily. It tuned up perfectly. I believe the new grip location on this bow really helps some
Mathews raised the grip location on this bow in comparison to the Chill X so it will aim much differently. Throw out all the information and everything you learned if you shot a Chill X before this bow. In my experience, the Halon wants a higher ratio of back weight in to front weight in comparison to the Chill X. I've also found that a longer front bar works best.
For comparison.
I ran a 24" with 7oz on a 10 degree down QD and a 15" w/18oz on my Chill X
27" w/ 4oz straight and a 15" w/ 17oz on my Halon X. I'll probably try a 30" as well.
I always ran even tiller on my Chill X and I am running some out of my top bolt on my Halon X. It's just a personal preference thing as to how I like the pressure put on my bow hand.
As far as speed goes, it's about 7-8 FPS slower than my Chill X.
Halon X
#65 (for comparison because that's what my Chill was) , 29.5" modules, 415gr arrow was getting around 287 thru the ProChrono. That was with a Triple X with 100gr points that I was shooting out of my Chill. I built some X-Cutters with extra point weight for the Halon but haven't graphed it.
This bow is SUPER accurate. The wider limbs and pockets paired with the new riser makes for a very stable platform. I think a lot of money will be won with this bow this year. The biggest piece of advice I have is dedicate plenty of time to get stabilizer weight and location honed in. I would recommend starting from scratch. I'm having to run around a 1:4 ratio from front to back. I truly believe Mathews has made a really nice bow here and I'm more than pleased with the direction they're heading with their new bows.
If anyone has anymore specific questions, feel free to ask and I will answer them to the best of my ability.
