My Halon X Review

With this bow still being new and not many out there yet, I figured I would put together a short review now that I've had enough time to spend with the bow to figure it out a little bit. I'm reviewing this bow as a 3D/Target bow, not a hunting bow. So I won't be touching on vibration/hand shock and noise.

This bow is being compared in large part to the Chill X and probably for good reason because of similar specs. The bows are completely different.

Here's some string angle info in comparison to the chill X

Halon X:

ATA at brace 34 15/16"
ATA at full draw 31 3/8"

Outside of cam to Outside of cam: 39 3/8"
Outside to outside at full draw: 36 3/8"

Chill X

ATA at brace 35 1/4"
ATA at full draw 31 3/4"

Outside to Outside 41"
Outside to Outside at full draw 36 3/4"

My Halon X was ordered in #70 and 29.5". 75% modules. Out of the box it drew 74lbs and drew 28.25" to the throat of the grip. I've set it to 67lbs now and I'm holding a touch over 18lbs.

The new cam system feels awesome. The draw cycle is very nice. You pull most of your weight in the first part of the draw cycle which is nice. There's no big humps throughout the draw. It draws similar to the NoCams but it's stiffer at brace. It has the same general smoothness throughout though.

The bow tuned up really well. They sent a shim kit with it so I was able to fine tune very easily. It tuned up perfectly. I believe the new grip location on this bow really helps some

Mathews raised the grip location on this bow in comparison to the Chill X so it will aim much differently. Throw out all the information and everything you learned if you shot a Chill X before this bow. In my experience, the Halon wants a higher ratio of back weight in to front weight in comparison to the Chill X. I've also found that a longer front bar works best.

For comparison.

I ran a 24" with 7oz on a 10 degree down QD and a 15" w/18oz on my Chill X

27" w/ 4oz straight and a 15" w/ 17oz on my Halon X. I'll probably try a 30" as well.

I always ran even tiller on my Chill X and I am running some out of my top bolt on my Halon X. It's just a personal preference thing as to how I like the pressure put on my bow hand.

As far as speed goes, it's about 7-8 FPS slower than my Chill X.

Halon X
#65 (for comparison because that's what my Chill was) , 29.5" modules, 415gr arrow was getting around 287 thru the ProChrono. That was with a Triple X with 100gr points that I was shooting out of my Chill. I built some X-Cutters with extra point weight for the Halon but haven't graphed it.

This bow is SUPER accurate. The wider limbs and pockets paired with the new riser makes for a very stable platform. I think a lot of money will be won with this bow this year. The biggest piece of advice I have is dedicate plenty of time to get stabilizer weight and location honed in. I would recommend starting from scratch. I'm having to run around a 1:4 ratio from front to back. I truly believe Mathews has made a really nice bow here and I'm more than pleased with the direction they're heading with their new bows.

If anyone has anymore specific questions, feel free to ask and I will answer them to the best of my ability.

It came out of the box 1.25" short draw length? Wow that's a quite a bit. I would be doing some cable/string tweaking to make it 70# when maxed out and get as close as I could to the correct draw length. But that's just me.

I will be shooting one of these bows as soon as they land in the shop. I really like the ChillX that I have now.

No, that measurement was to the throat of the grip so you would add 1.75" to get AMO draw length of 30"
It came in 1/2" long.

Coug09-For the last few years I have been using a Dead End Pro Bow Balancer for stabilizing my bows and love the way it holds in my hand especially level front to back. At the stabilizer weight you are using does the bow balance level from front to back? Since the Halon X is similar platform to the Wake I found that a lot of back weight was needed for that bow also.

Thats a nice looking bow! are the limbs not as parallel as the other new models?

I'll do my best to answer some of the questions

Guys, personally I don't know of ANY bow companies that go off of AMO draw length. I personally think that measurement is outdated. Just my opinion though.

The shim kit was included in the box with this bow. I already had another one though. Any quality Mathews dealer should have it as well.

With no accessories, the bow balances neutrally. I was talking about how it aims or balances at full draw

Tfanz, I wouldn't characterize the wall as soft at all. I also wouldn't have characterized the TRGs wall as soft. It has a very solid wall.

The bow measured dead on 35" ATA out of the box before I started adjusting limb bolts and adjusting for draw length. I can't compare it to the Defiant 34. The Chill X probably is a little quieter and has a little less vibration.

Surprised to hear that the chill x would be quieter, with less vibe. I shot the chill x and halon 6 side by side and the halon 6 was quieter and had less vibe. This was one of the biggest reasons I am so anxious to try the halon x. I'm hoping it has a similar feel to the shorter halons only a little better with its longer ata. Hopefully my findings on noise and vibe will be a little different. Out of all the bows I've shot this year the defiant 34 has the edge. Still anxious to compare it with the halon x. I tend to prefer the feel of Mathews and Hoyt bows, even though they feel quite different to each other.

I'm not sure I understand. What is outdated about an industry standard measurement? And even if you changed the draw length standard to "True" draw length or something like that, manufacturers would still probably try to fudge it. It seems pretty simple to me, but I know that most bow companies fudge their draw lengths to the long side, probably to get more speed out of them. I do know that both of the Xpeditions I have bought recently were spot on their stated draw length. But the 2 Bowtechs before that were long by between 1/4" and 1/2".

In my opinion I think it may have something to do with the strings after they put them on! Hoyts come in about 1/4-1/2" long always also! Factory strings use served end loops which take longer to settle in! Most aftermarket string makers use tag end loops and they settle in faster! Could explain why every bow comes in long! When they put them on bow measures correct DL and by the time the bow reaches customer they settle and DL is long! Not positive this is why but something to think about!

I've been able to spend a lot of time with the bow yesterday and today. I simply can't say enough about it. It's extremely extremely accurate. I finally have the stabilizer setup tuned in and was able to shoot a 3D round at the club today. First arrow at a 3D target was inside out. I think she's gonna be a fine bow.

Is there any way to squeeze an extra 1/2 inch of draw out of this bow, I need at least 31" draw?

Ordered mine the week they were released. At that time they told the shop April. Had the shop call this week to check on my halon 6 and ask again about the halon X..... Still told them April. I really want to get my hands on it now.
