After about 3 months of research and discussion making I finally pulled the trigger on MR pop up 28. I plan on doing a full review on this post with the amount of storage it has and posting several pictures of it packed with different equipment/stands. As I did my initial looking around I found several posts about the pack however I still had numerous question. Everybody please us this as an open floor to ask whatever you want about my experience. If you have any questions about size and capacity I plan on doing a write up about that. If you’d like any specific gear packed or stands in the load self I’ll try my best to accommodate. Here are some pics to get it started

I checked the 28 and 38 at the pro shop. Im definitely getting one. Probably go for the 38 myself!
. I struggled in this decision as well it was either the 28, 38, or a Pintler. When I originally started looking at packs I wanted something minimal my old pack was over crowded and I didn’t use have the stuff that I took hunting. I limited it to the necessities and I’m glad I decided on the 28 I’m going to do a “bag dump” to show how much I actually have in the pack.

What’s the difference between the ‘19 version and the 2020?
The “2020” version was release at the end on 2019 it has a different style pop up system the old system was a tent style pole that popped up basically limiting you to and up and down position. The new version utilized trekking pole style clamps that allow you to telescope the pop up feature allowing you to adjust the height to your liking.

Thanks for the reply...definitely an upgrade.

Wonder why the Popup 18 isn’t offered for 2020.

Nice pack for sure, I’ll probably go with one for the 2 day shed hunts we do.
. From the reading I have done it seems that consumers were requesting more storage than the 18/28 were offering so the developed the 38 and cut the 18. For me personally I can’t imaging going smaller than the 28. I am using this pack for hunting in the south out of a treestand so I don’t pack a huge amount of gear. When I finally decide to go on an elk hunt I’ll buy a Metcalf.

I’ve heard that the new belt still doesn’t cut the mustard. Can you comment on that?

I am a bigger guy 6’1 275. I ordered a size XL for a 42” waist. The padded section of the belt wraps to just past my hip bones. I wish that the padded portion wrapped another 2-4 inches around me. It is comfortable but I do feel that the belt on the Guide Light frame is a better fit in both thickness, width, and length. Keep in mind though this pack wasn’t designed to haul huge loads all the time, in my opinion. I do think that this belt is going to work fine in situations like mine if someone wants to carry a 20-30 pound hang and hunt set up.

I would be curious to hear the comfort level with normal 20lb day loads, sold the original due to discomfort with normal loads, hopefully they fixed that. Great idea overall.
I second this. I sold my original 28 because it didn’t know what it wanted to be. It was too rigid to be a day pack pack but it was extremely uncomfortable for prolonged distance with any real load weight.

I went with the rhino and couldn’t be happier as far as performance under load, but that comes at a weight cost. If MR would put the GL of GLMT suspension on that pack they’d have a true winner.

I think it's relative, but the pop up isn't designed to be a heavy hauler, it's a day pack with the ability to haul weight. with that being said, I have packed out 2 bulls with my 18, and several whole quartered bucks (probably 8 or 9 now) and it has been nothing short of impressive when considering what the pack is designed for. I absolutely love mine, and I have been very pleased with it loaded down heavy.... the new version has an upgraded design, and waist belt, and the original has exceeded my expectations by a good amount.

if I had to pack a whole elk out tomorrow, and had the choice between my pop up and a kuiu pack, I would not consider the kuiu (and it's designed to be a hauler) I guess it depends on your expectations...

getting the pop up, I was excited, and figured on my way out, the first load I could take a front shoulder of a bull, but that's not so.... I have no issue going several miles with a whole bone in buck or roosie ham in that little pack... the belt has been fine for me.

I like the pop up because it's not a big framed large pack, that's the point, it's cooler than full size packs (that thick cushion makes them hotter) and it's low profile and not constantly hung up in the brush.... you have to consider what the pack is designed to do.

honestly, the 38 doesn't make sense to me, it takes away from the benefit of the whole pop up concept to me. I am now buying another full size pack (not sure yet between MR and kifaru) that is to not put wear and tear on my pop up 18, and just use it chasing roosies, it will last forever just using it for that, and it's the PERFECT pack for that.

the new pop up sounds even better, but I wouldn't trade one for my 18.... I like the size, and thicker shoulder straps and belt make it warmer, and I like it doesn't kill me heat wise.... everything is a compromise

These are some pics with a XOP Maximus with 3 Helium sticks. The pack carried this load well for me. Again I wish the padded section of the waist belt was a little long however it’s not uncomfortable the way it is now more of a personal preference. This is a rather large stand for a hang and hunt it’s just to see a size reference. I have attached the sticks using the MR quick attach straps. There is plenty of room to put the sticks in the load self if you wanted to carry a bow with these straps.

Same as before except this is a Lone Wolf Alpha and no sticks. This is the setup I’ll probably go with and just put the sticks in the load self for easy of use and to still access the pack.
