Hi everyone,
Going hunting in the morning and using Spitfires for the first time. They fly very close to my fieldpoints with my target but I'm a little concerned because they do not expand when hitting my foam target. I have a McKenzie block, the yellow one with the layers of soft foam. Do you think these heads should open on impact with it? Should I be concerned?
Thanks for replies!

wrangler is right they may be slammin shut from the quick stop of the target, but if thats not the case, what poundage are u shooting, if its a low poundage u might not be gettin enough power to open them up since they are closed tighter then normal mechs like the ones that stay closed with the bands, they open real easy

I use them and have been impressed...they leave awsome holes
You gotta notice when you pull them out of the target they close while your pulling. If they stick out the other side of the target and are closed then there might be a problem??

These heads open everytime, no matter what the target is. What you are seeing on your target is the top portion only...put your finger or something you can feel with, I guarantee they are fully opened in that target within 1/2 inch from the outer layer. Hide is obviously a lot less mushy than target material and they open before passing thru the skin.
The picture above is typical of a spitfire.
I have used these heads for years and only once did I question if they opened, in that case I had a great blood trail but because I second guessed it I waited until the next morning only to find the deer stolen by a hunter with an atv less than 500 yds from where I shot it.
It was a pass thru shot but I believe it was slightly high and forward.

I have found that with targets, you should just use practice blades and save your targets.

Obviously when you pull the shaft out the blades fold up. If you really need proof shoot it into an old foam target and cut it in half.
Nothing flys better than these heads, but I do suggest you put some energy behind them if you want pass thrus.
These heads are not the best penetrators due to design, but from a modern compound more often than not you will still see a pass thru unless you are shooting big round arrows and drill the shoulder blade.

Thanks for quick replies...

My confidence is high thanks to you all. I'm using them tomorrow. Yep, I love how they fly from my Prowler! Drawing 60# so plenty of punch. I'm thinking they are closing when pulled out. I just need more time to check them with a shallower target, mine is too deep to check with fingers. I especially love the fact that I don't have to retune or resight between target and hunting since I do a lot of both.

try this...........

i had some people say i was nutz in saying they close after opening up. SO, i place sheets of paper on the double foam target, one on the front the other on the back. Guess what, i am still nutz :D , but it showed this strange three lines around the hole............what the...........they opened and then closed when the arrow stop. i really love the spitfires.

I too had the same concern - but I read the package (I know - no man in his right mind reads the directions!) and they dispel the myths surrounding the unopening, including the test with the paper listed above

Another way to check

If your getting enough penetration in your target, another way to check is to simply push the arrow the rest of the way through and watch the broadhead as it comes out the back.

I have never had any mechanical that didn't open checking this way.

I've shot quite a few mech heads that don't open on foam. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. They do open on deer, and I have seen the results. They are very effective heads. Personally, I am going to shoot the NAP Scorpion XP next year. I like a good sharp 1.25" mech head. The scorpions open quick and penetrate very well.
