Pretty good - check out the Tioughnioga (Tee-off-nee-oh-gah) Wildlife management unit in Madison County. I scoped it out while turkey hunting this spring. Plenty of crabapples, hidden meadows, etc. Pushed three deer out of one meadow.
The village of Canastota is within the town of Lenox, which itself is one of three towns in Madison County in the containment area - Lenox, Oneida, Stockbridge.
From the regs:
Within this containment area, it is illegal to:
* Move certain animal parts OUT of the containment area.
* Un-butchered deer carcasses.
* the brain, eyes, spinal cord, tonsils, intestinal tract, spleen, or retropharyngeal lymph nodes (found in the upper neck and jaw area), or any portion of such parts, or any carcass containing such parts.
* Disposal of all deer carcasses and parts, except those parts removed in the field during normal field dressing, must be at a landfill within the CWD containment area or via a commercial or municipal waste removal operator.
However, the Tioughnioga WMU area does not appear to be within the containment area. It spreads across the towns of New Woodstock and the town of Nelson. Most of Madison County is outside the containment area.
that does suck about the cwd. the guy we are hunting with says we will be hunting 7f or 7m. we will be there nov 7 till the 13th. is that rutting time in NY ? are those areas in the cwd section were you can't bring deer out of those limits?
i hope it works because i am swaping a baited bear hunt for this guy and his two brothers. the bears are coming in great to the baits so far. we got some great pictures of them. hopefully he is doing the homework for us, so when we get in NY they will have the areas picked out. I think these guys are getting a great deal.
i'mfrom there originaly and if the hunting dosen't work out for you the salmon in the salmon river in palaski will be running. there is a casino right there called the turning stone casino and it has everything, cards,dice,slots,and keno. also the boxing hall of fame is there too. good luck with the hunt.
i live in oneida, NY and have been baring with this CWD issue for awhile, but I have seem just as many deer if not more than in the past. the issues involving CWD in Madison-Oneida County can be found on the DEC website.
Now the rutting question. You picked a great time to come and bowhunt. November 11th is the peak day of the rut and Ive killed two bucks in the past two years on that day, and always take it off from school. Good luck this year
