how do you know what length and type of string to use? for a longbow shooting graphite arrows for target pracrice.

For the string material,
to be on the safe side, you probably want to use dacron (B-50).

In terms of string length,
it depends on the brace height you are looking for.

I like to make recurve strings about 3-4 inches
shorter than the AMO length of the bow.

Use a cloth tape measure,
and measure from string groove to string groove.

Lay the cloth tape measure on the bow limbs,
and follow the curvature of the bow.

Not sure about the length for longbow strings.
