I believe the story was that the arrow blew up on release and part of it went through his hand, Notice the splinters.Randy

Or else the arrow broke when he fired. There are several pictures just like it on the internet - even one with an aluminum arrow.
Try google image search and you'll have plenty.

Obviously either he had too weak of an arrow spine or he was shooting a damaged arrow or both.

that has to be faked, unless the arrow was too short, dropped down onto his hand, and then he jumped and released. If the arrow broke then it wouldn't have penetrated like that.
