For those of you who hunt in the Great State Of Pennsylvania we have 61 days until the opening day of the 2006 archery season. Hope this year will be plentiful for all that venture out into the Great Outdoors.

September 30th can't get here soon enough!!!!!!!

Field and Stream has had several articles that I can think of highlighting PA deer management. We have created quite the stir with our regulations and such, and the results we are seeing now from them.

Long 59 days...

Antler restrictions and herd management were two terms I certainly did not enjoy hearing about several years ago (what year did the AR start?) here in Pennsylvania. I was certainly a skeptic, but tried to stay open-minded about the whole thing.

Now, several years later, the herd may be smaller, but IMO, the restrictions and management put into effect by the PGC has certainly improved the overal quality of the deer (in most areas), bigger bucks and healthier does and the population has not diminished as significantly as some may think.

I believe the biggest reason there were so many complaints of hunters not seeing deer last year, was in great part due to all of the feed in the woods (acorns) and the fact that the deer did not have to move very far from their bedding areas to feed. I saw lots of deer, almost everyday I was out in archery and rifle season, but I hunt way back in the timber, right next to their beds. Sometimes you have to make adjustments and go to where the deer are, or at least where they'll be during legal shooting hours. They can be outsmarted ya know.

YUP...lets get back to overcrowding, small antlers...yeah buddy! Bet you would enjoy WV! Bowhunter just had an article about hunting PA!!! Because there is LESS deer but NICER deer.
Actually I still have the small antlers but we lost the overcrowding... And the deer aren't getting bigger, but their available habitat has certaintly gotten smaller! damn transplants.

Not hijacking zenoutback.

Check out http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=492&q=154801

This will give you some information about the area, the county, state game lands, and contact information for some local shops that may be able to give you some pointers and/or advice.

Judging from your responce about antler restrictions (repeatedly) and what not I am going to have to assume you're a member of huntingPA.com, correct?

Im dying to get out for my first bow season ever. 29 years old and just starting with bow. LOL

As far as antler restrictions go, I was one of the biggest opponents until I saw seven different bucks on the first day of rifle season last year. 3 were takers and one of those 3 I brought home with me. I had previously only seen a few bucks in the woods in all the years combined. I do think that some areas are being over hunted and some are not being hunted enough. I guess time will tell.

I had also heard that Gary Alt, the guy that enacted all the restrictions, had resigned and moved away. I wonder why that was?

man after the season i had last year

i can hardly wait. i saw over 30 bucks last year while on stand in PA 10 were in the 120 inch range 1 was about 150 and the rest were small basket racks, i ended up shooting one of the 120 inch deer over a decoy on the 5th of november. It was an unreal year here in pa and it just keeps getting better there is a deer that has been seen several times that will push 170 wich is an awesome deer any where in the coutry but 5 years ago if there were talk of 1 deer in the 120-130 range in my home town EVERYONE WOULD KNOW OF IT now these deer are common PA is truley becoming a big buck state.
