Yes they are! Somewhat similar to a over ripe banana is the closest I can think of.

Due to higher tannin levels in red oak acorns deer don't seem to hit them as much (here at least). They are very bitter compared to white oak which are less tanic and deer will demolish those. I'd say if you have a decent amount of papaws I'd hunt close and see what happens.

where this site is located there are both pawpaws and red oaks there is one of the best deer paths i have ever seen going through there i didnt know if it was because of the oaks or the pawpaws.
