I use straight Clorox (any bleach would work). Just dab it on the area(s) .....kills most of the itch and dries it up quickly.

Bleach is the best thing I've used, too. Just rub the rash and then rub in the bleach with a washcloth.

I secong the clorox! Except, I scratch the surface skin with something before I put it on. If that does not work, ask the Dr. for a prescription of Prednesone or a Medrol Dose pac.

Poison Ivy sucks, but poison oak sucks worse! I get them both a few times per year!

Bingo on the Prednesone. 3 days and I'm all dryed up. Poison Ivy, Oak, sumack(sp)...whatever. My Dr. expects to see me each year.

Zanfel

One word...ZANFEL. Weird name, but it works like nothing else I tried on a SEVERE case I had this year on my arms. I looked like I had went through a house fire.

After 1 week of trying everything, but the kitchen sink over the counter a friend advised me to use Zanfel. It comes in a 1 oz. tube and costs $25 at Wal-mart. It was worth 10 times that by the time I tried it. It stops the itch on the first application. In about 4 hours the itch will start again and re-apply whenever the itching returns.

I'm telling you it does miracles in no time flat.

I got it for the first time ever this summer  Used to be able to roll in the stuff without fear....... not anymore.

I got a really bad case on my ankles and calf's. Tried all the homemade remedies, and most of the store bought stuff. After 4 weeks of pure hell I finally relented and went to see the Doc. 5 days of Prednisone and I was good to go.

I got a few small re-occurances later in the summer (off clothing that still had traces of the urishoil) and Cortaid did help. I tried the Zanfel, it did nothing....... though I know several people have used it successfully. I ended up throwing some clothes out cause I could never get rid of the oil from them.

Do a search for my original thread I posted here, it ended up being a few pages long and had lots of information on it.

Good luck

If you visit a doctor who is an allergy specialist, they inject "small" doses over a period of time. People who are extremely allergic to it "MIGHT" have their systems start to build an immunity to it, but nothing is for sure. I would not want to eat it, nor feed it to my son. I am so highly allergic to it that I have had it in my mouth, inside my eye lids, ears and everything from a campfire. I was always told by doctors that you could not get it from smoke/wind blowing past it, etc.. - I say Bull! When I was a teenager we went to a campfire and the logs still had the poison ivy vine on them. I was a mess just from the smoke!

Methyl Ethel Ketone worked great but not easily accessable. I use rubbing alcohol and then put lotion to smooth the itch. I use to get it bad on my arms but now I take a antihistamine when I know I will be close to it. I would also rap my arms at might with a tshirt to keep it from spreading onto the rest of my buddy. Make sure you wash your clothes and bedding in atleast warm water. I think they recommend hot to kill it but somethings you just can't wash in hot water.

a plant called jewel weed. It grows in wet areas and has little orangy/yellow flowers. Its what is in most of those poison ivy creams. Crush up the leaves and stem and put it on. It seriously works. Prednisone works sweet too along with the zanfel.

Usuall the steroid dose pack clears it right up when i get it bad, ive tried bleach it didnt help the doctor thought i had some type of white rash when i went to see him after i tried it! As far as getting it on your clothes wash them in Tecnu you can get it at rite aid, also you can wash with this if you know you have been in ivy and it will wash away the oils that cause the rash, gojo also works good for this!
