What the heck is it?
It’s an incredibly innovative, SPRING LOADED tree-strap.
I got one of these last year and meant to tell you fellers about it but A head-on collision left me in the hospital right before the rut here in Alabama. Although my season was over right as it got started last year I was able to hunt long enough to kill one deer with my bow and use the Q-safe enough times to recognize its value.
Basically, Q-Safe is a, “Semi Ridgid”, tree-strap that is actually Spring Loaded. The manufacturer uses the words, “TREE-ANCHOR”, and I’m not smart enough to come up with a more creative way to describe it! I like his term though, because in the same fashion that a Prusic is designed to work as a one-way anchor point this works on basically the same principal. It slides effortlessly up the tree as you ascend or descend but the instant you apply any pressure it, “ANCHORS”, you to the tree. Think of a hybrid between a traditional tree-strap and a linesman’s belt it really gives the benefits of both with out the noise and movement of either one.
It’s about the same length of a traditional tree-strap and rolls up really small for storage in your pack or you can wear it like a belt, which is what I do.
There is some type of semi rigid material inside that is VERY SIMILAR TO ONE OF THOSE CHILDS SLAP BRACELETS. You know the small rolled up semi ridged bracelets that once un-rolled straightens out into a straight ridgid piece that the kids, “slap on”, to their wrists. It forms a perfect fitting bracelet that forms a snug (but not restrictive) custom fit to any wrist, regardless of size. The Q-Safe works exactly the same way except it has a loop on the end that feeds into itself around the tree and you clip onto with your carabiner.
Climbing with Q-safe is a breeze! It moves quietly up and down the tree with very little effort on your part and each time you raise or lower it, the spring loaded quality of it locks down around the tree on its own! A MAJOR safety issue with hunters is complacency. Complacency is what gets hunters killed in the woods. I can tell you that with my traditional tree-strap I keep a ton of slack in it so I can move it up faster and get around any knots on the tree etc. Although I am painfully aware of the un-safe amount of length on my strap; I NEVER CINCH IT DOWN SAFELY! I’m TOO DANG LAZY errrrrr, Complacent. Well with Q-Safe I can be laz- (complacent), because the spring-loaded quality of Q-Safe means that it cinches down snugly and securely to the tree on its own!
I used it enough last year to view it as a critical piece of my core equipment. I have my old tree-strap in a pouch on my harness that honestly I never used after receiving the Q-Safe until one day when I forgot to grab the Q-Safe off the hunting table in my garage. I hadn’t realized how much more effective and streamlined the Q-Safe is until I got to the tree without it. I usually walk in with it around my waste and on this particular morning When I got to my tree, after a very long walk i reached down and it was gone!
It’s a lot like my love affair with the Thirdhand Archery, “Tree-Strap w/hip-clip”. You don’t realize how much easier your life is with this small affordable piece of core equipment till you leave the dang thing at home and have to hunt without it.
When I killed my deer last year I wore the Q-Safe like a belt and attached my old tree strap around the deer’s neck and hooked it to the free end of my Q-Safe and dragged the deer out that way. I don’t recall seeing anything on the website suggesting this technique but It worked great as a deer drag!
They sell the Q-Safe for like $50 and is one of those things that, for me anyway, is a great value and makes your life a whole lot safer and easier.
I am the laziest (most complacent lol) hunter in the woods but with Q-Safe, lazy doesn’t have to mean dead!
I don’t have any affiliation with the company and paid full price for my Q-Safe
