I have an 2003 Pro Tec I purchased a month or so ago. I just purchased the EZE Laser Tuning Aid tool to get my center shot set-up.

In the instructions it says it can be used for cam alignment. I tried this out and have found that the cams are not aligned. The Laser light on the string at the knocking point drifts off as I rotate it to both cams.

It appears that the top cam (cam.5's) is shimmed in the center of the limb when it needs to be offset to one side to make the string in line with the center shot.

Is this an issue that I should have corrected or is this how it is supposed to be?

Thanks for the help

alignment

I could be wrong in the following. but here goes any way. if you were to place a tape on the lower and upper limbs where they meet the riser. measure across the diamenter of the limbs find the center and place a mark there. now measure 3/16th to the left of that mark on a right handed bow and put a mark on the tape place a ruler on the riser at the burger button or rest mounting hole your string should intersect all three marks. most risers are not perfectaly square or flat there fore it is hard to get a reading with a laser or those string centering guages

you will be to far out using the lazer. I have tried that method on my protec also and it did not work for me. try this. set the center shot 3/4 inch from the riser. If I remember this is what hoyt recomends as a starting point. then paper tune, bare shaft or what other method you want to use. then work your way back from 20 to 50 yards making slight rest adjustments to the rest for left or right drift. if you can group at longer yards more power to you. Make sure the sight is level before you do this. This is what I have had the best results with.

as for the cam from top to bottom not the same, I have not played with that. the bottom cam is a little wider than the top and so the string track is not the same. I have considered moving the top cam out a little but the bow shoots good now so I may leave it the way it is.

I am not having any tuning issues. I just purchased the Laser tuner and read that you can align the cams with it and tried it.

My main question is should I be concerned with the misalignment? Unless it came from Hoyt this way, then I'd say the previous owner had it worked on and the Tech reinstalled the cams with bushing that made the TOP cam centered with the limb instead of with an offset that would keep the string parallel with the center line of the bow.

Make sense?? Or am I just confusing everyone? :)

Top cam thrustwashers are the same thickness.... bottom cam .050 thrustwasher is on string side.... 0.030 thrustwasher is on the cable side....

The laser will not work properly on the Hoyt tec risers, because the riser is not machined in the mounting area to accept the laser's mounting bracket.

been there done that....:D

Get your laser & clamp it to a straight edge or level with a G clamp. Run the laser along the edge to check how accurate it is. I have been through 2 of those lasers & had to adjust the beam to get it right.[Adjustment screws are under the caution sticker] Clamp it to one end & then in the centre of the straight edge when checking it. :D

So what you are saying is that Hoyt intended the string NOT to be in line with the center line of the bow or the riser? So when I set up the bow in my bow vise with a string leveling tool http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...e=index&rid=&cmCat=MainCatcat21424&hasJS=true to set my Sure lock scope level, I am going to be off at longer distance?

As long as the string follows the same path every time you will have an accurate bow. Mathews strings run at a slight angle and they shoot just fine, too. Newberry also uses similar spacing with the SAT hybrid cam, except that the spacing is machined into the cam.

I messed with a lazer for a few days. It now resides in my junk box and I break it out every once in a while to terrorize the cat. I can do everything with a long straight edge as I can the lazer.

It was explained somewhere here at AT that Hoyt designs this into their bows to help compensate for cable guard torque.

That ain't how I set my scopes... that tool (and I have one) is for setting the starting point of the arrow rest, prior to tuning the nock height...

There are several ways to set the 3 axis on your sight bar/ scope I use a BriteSite tool... http://www.britesitetuner.com/Sight_Leveler/sight_leveler.html
Thats a nice tool, what does something like that cost for one or two uses?

Looks like about 80 bucks at the website.

I can say if I had one, it'd get used a lot more than once or twice.
How so? Unless you drop or abuse your bow, why would you need it anymore frequently?

I've got 6 bows, and 5 sight bars with 3rd axis levels plus 9 scopes that I play with...

but many of my friends who shoot competitively own the Britesite, even though they own one sight. It just makes it easier to check something or adjust when the scope rod shoots loose... :D

What Javi said... and I seem to have a habit of tearing my bow apart and changing everything just after I get it shooting good! :D

Even if the screws don't loosen up (and they do, all the time), I try to check everything on my setup on a regular basis. It can help with confidence when you know everything on your bow is right. If you miss a shot, you can't blame the bow - or sight, in this case.

If you keep an eye on Ebay, you may get one very cheap. Davis archery make the same type of jig, and it is a great product. I got mine for around $10. I am not sure if he is still listing them, since I am sure he took a beating on it for $10.
