Shot a nice big black squirrel this evening and want to get mounted. Hide is in good shape. How do I presrrve it till I can get it to taxidermist?

Just wrap it in a bag?
Wrap it in saran wrap then a bag?
Wrap it in a towel?
Any other tips?

Any quick advice?

DO NOT field dress it. Your taxidermist may need to skin it a certain way in order to mount it in the pose you'd like. Also, don't saran wrap it. Instead wrap it in newspaper and place in a paper bag. Plastic retains heat and isn't good for keeping the hair from "slipping"

All the squirrels that I've shot, stiffen up like a board within 30 seconds of shooting them. I've never seen anything like it. I don't think I could do much with one except throw it in the freezer, they're so stiff already, you'd think they were frozen solid.

Sorry I left here in a rush, I was in a hurry haha. Anyway, here's what I did:

I dabbed up the blood and cleaned his hide a little bit.
I made sure he was dry.
I wrapped him in 2 newspapers, very carefully.
I put him in a brown paper bag that I taped closed.

The next day I put him in a cooler with ice packs and I took him to my taxidermist.

She laughed at me! Haha. She said I didnt have to go through any of that trouble since I was bringing it only like 20 hours after it was killed. She said it kinda inconvienced her that I froze it cause she was gonna start on it immediately. She says I should have him back in 2-3 months.

She said cleaning it was not necasarry cause she has to re do it after its skinned and soaked. That makes sense.

I asked her for some tips, and she said that I did everything more than good, but she said that next time if I am going to keep something in my freezer for awhile to put it in a plastic bag so that it doesn't freezer burn. I'm just repeating what she said there.

The cost is $175 for the mount, plus $10.50 tax, and maybe $5-$10 for the piece of wood. Not too bad for good work, I cant wait to see it!

Thanks for all the fast help everyone, I really appriciate that!
