Rebuilding vintage compound Bear Magnum Hunter

An old friend of mine recently gave me a (new) Bear Magnum Hunter compound bow. My friend is 84 years old and has had this new bow in his barn for well over 30 years. He bought it new in the early 80s, hunted with it but never killed anything.

We dug it out of the barn and 35 years of South Texas barn life has taken its toll on this old Bear. Mice chewed on the strings and cables and it’s on need of serious repairs.

I’m wanting to rebuild it and replace the steel cables. The bow has a lot of sentimental value to me. I met this old vet on Veterans Day years ago and we’ve been close ever since.
My goal is to get it up and running and harvest a deer with it this season on his ranch.

Im looking for a source for new cables. Please feel free to chime in with any ideas for cables replacement. One option is buying another bow on eBay for parts replacement. I’d prefer to just buy a set of cables. I already ordered a new string.

Contact proshops, some may still have the cables. If that fails you can have those made with bicycle cables. Or ask a string maker to make the cables for you, it will work the same, the only difference being that everything is now string material, instead of steel and string. You will not have to deal with the teardrops too, as they are prone to breaking. |More important is to take the cams out and check the axles (corrosion, rust, bent), and whether or not the draw length fits you.
Post pcs off the restored bow.

Back in the day we rebuilt steel cable sets, I think Martin sold the kit with the crimps and you could basically make them to whatever length needed.

You will nee to keep the stock cable with the plastic splitter/hanger that attached to the axles though. So hopefully those are in good shape.

Well there’s no pro shops in the area, besides my bass pro shop that doesn’t know the difference between a glue on nock and a peep sight, they’re the worst.

I wouldn’t know where to start for making cables, plus there’s the metal crimps (balls) on the cables that mate to the cams.

There are a few people around that still do it but they are getting real rare. Most places won't do it for liability reasons. Those crimped on ends need to be done exactly right or it will be a huge disaster and liability. The crimp ons are also getting rare to find.

Type Bear Magnum hunter in your search engine. I found this on ebay in 30 seconds........lol. If you are just building it up for sentimental value and not really using it piece it together with used parts. This is $80.
