Recommendations on outdoor target arrow

Hi all

I'm looking to build my first set of outdoor target arrows. I got into shooting 50m target last summer and really enjoyed it. I would like to get more serious about it. Last summer I was simply using my hunting arrows but this year I plan on building a dedicated set of arrows for target.

I have a 31.25" draw length and my long arrows really drift in the wind. So I see an advantage to using a smaller diameter shaft. I'm willing to put a little money into a good set of arrows, but I'm also shooting more for fun than anything and I'm guessing "match grade" arrows would be lost on my skill level. So basically looking for something with a good price/quality ratio. Also I would like them to be fairly durable.

Can anyone recommend a shaft that they think would work for me?

Good point. I am shooting compound, 31.25" DL, 58lbs DW

Most likely going to end up with 340 or 300 spine depending on the length I decide to cut and the point weight I decide to use. I'm not new to arrow building. I'm just trying to wade through the offerings available that would make a good outdoor target arrow.

Victory VAP if you want budget set of arrows. Probably Skylon arrows will work even better if you have these in US market and have nothing against Chinese products.

Easton Procomp should be as good as Victory but probably will cost more.

When you are ready to pay top dollar - Easton Protour or Carbon Express Nano Pro are your choices, these are the best money can get you for target archery.

Once again, to answer this question, we should be asking you a question.... What kind of "outdoor target" will be your primary game?

You're right. I mentioned that I was shooting 50m but I should have been more specific. I will mainly be shooting "FITA" style archery. I plan to dabble in 3D a little for fun. But the arrows I am looking to build would be specifically for FITA style shooting.

I would love to try field but the sad truth is that it just doesn't exist in my area.

I've been using Gold Tip Pierces for 3D and really like them...they are a .166 ID shaft so wind drift is minimized. They have been very accurate, no prob pounding a paper plate at 100 with consistency. i fletched them with Flex fletch shield cuts FFP187 which are just under 2", they fly like darts.

You gotta just go to the gold tip website and click on the pierce tours if you want the straightest or the pierce platinums, they are freaking sweet.

I got into field tournaments the year before covid so I got some pierce platinums and fletched them up, I picked the 340 spine ones because with its gpi they weigh within 2 grains of my 3d arrows so I can use the same sight tape.

For the love of god they are awesome, they are by far the best arrow I have ever shot with second to none and I only shoot with them in the week or two leading up to a field shoot because I am primarily a 3d shooter but those weeks are so awesome.

They are a micro diameter shaft so they do awesome in the wind and being a micro diameter you can shoot crazy tight groups at long distance that are so fun to see.

I group tune my arrows to the same hole accuracy with a hooter shooter and have been doing it for almost 10 years now and to see a micro diameter arrow actually hit the same little hole over and over is simply unreal and these arrows did it right out of the box and only two of them needed me to turn a nock to move them over to the little hole and I believe it was only about a quarter inch movement that needed to be fixed on them. Then all 12 of them would smoke the little hole.

Keep in mind that my first dozen were the pierce platinum shafts which are the second tier, I did get a dozen tours also but have not fletched them up yet. My platinum's are so freaking good and are holding up so strong to the beating they take I just haven't seen a need to break out the new tours.

Now, with your longer draw length I can see you going with a stiffer spine and they offer them. Tours go up to 250 spine so you can choose something sweet for your setup. I am running the same 120 grain points in mine that I use in my 3d arrows. My 3d arrows are gold tip x cutters with 120 grain points and they come in at 372 grains total weight. My Platinums come in with 120 grain points at 375 grains I think and again that is why I chose the 340 spine. Now my x cutters are a 250 spine so it was hard for me to choose the 340 spine but all I can tell you is that it has not been a issue at all and in fact things have worked awesome.

All I do to switch to my field arrows is go back to 70 yards and I unlock my arrow rest and I start shooting and moving the arrow rest up until I am hitting dead on, this allows me to not have to move my sight needle. I make a mark on my arrow rest where it was at for the 3d arrows so I can just go back easily. Then I usually have to do a very few windage clicks and I am dead on.

As far as my setup, I run razor feathers. I have used them for almost 10 years for 3d and I just love them. For nocks you have got to use the gold tip pins and the gold tip mini hd pin nocks. they are really durable and they never have weird failures for no reason, they are a very good pin nock. I do not use the little golden thing protect the rear of the arrow, can't remember the name of them right now but they will come with the arrow. I have bashed them over and over in training and competition and not had any shaft damage, just replace the pin and nock and you are up and running again. The gold tip points for these arrows are awesome and you have to get the fact weights for them to make the perfect point weight. I believe my points are 100 grain ones and I add the 20 grain weight.
