REI Rant

I apologize in advance if this should be posted elsewhere but figure it should go here since it involves a supplier you DIY'ers use.

I call REI the other day asking for their help with selecting rope materials for a lineman rope with a prusik knot. I explain that this will be used while climbing trees for hunting. They then tell me that because this application is not an outdoor sport they cannot advise me due to legal reasons. ARE YOU SERIOUS? They can advise someone what to use for rock climbing, which is much more dangerous IMO than hunting. What a crock!

Ok rant over.

I feel your pain but insurance regulation are a tricky matter. Especially since there rope and equipment is designed and they are trained in climbing, this is something they just dont know about so although frustraiting I feel they did the responsible thing.

I also understand your pain. Sometimes these guys just throw common sense right out the window..
I bought a Muddy harness this year, and it came with a rope and a pretied prussic, love it. I hook up to the prussic and
then move it as I climb up,once I get on stand then I switch over to the tree strap buckle. Works great.

I've had arguments with my fried about whether or not they are an anti-hunter organization. I don't think they actively try to prohibit hunting but they certainly want nothing to do with the sportsmen. Over the last 5 years camo has become an incredibly popular clothing pattern even for the non hunters of the world. Despite that you cannot find a single article of fabric or any thing else for that matter in their store that has a camo pattern on it. This is clear evidence to me that they actively avoid all things that may potentially be related to hunting or the hunting community. I doubt that is the reason they refused to help you but it is a good enough reason for me to give my money to someone else.

It's funny you mention that because REI being anti-hunting was the impression I got but didn't state it here.

as a rock climber i do not agree that climbing is more dangerous. IMO but that said if you want a demonstration in the knot and rope stuff. just go to the REI and do not say anything about climbing trees or archery.
I bought, from REI, 11mm for the static line. 7mm for the prusic and all is good. Got the advice from this site.
Unfortunately for me there are no rock climbing stores in NJ. Additionally, after that incident I refuse to give them my business. I found another online site that was more than happy to help me out. I'll be using them.

Take a look at www.safetreehunt.com.

Link to an article in Field & Stream as well as specs and supplier information for rope.

Thanks! I work very close to that; will check them out.

I was a customer and a "member" of REI many years ago. The organization changed from a coop to a commercial retailer with a decidedly anti hunting stand. This was very apparent in their literature. I quit them. There are many places to get my gear who do not contribute to anti-hunting organizations.
So I'm not the only 1 who believes them to be ant-hunting.

I understand your frustration but I would be siding on REI on this issue because you told them that it was for tree climbing and not rock climbing. If they were to advice you to an off label use of the equipment and you got hurt then they would have a massive lawsuit on their hands. If you were to go back in and ask how to tie a proper prusik knot and what ratio of main line to safety line to use then I bet they would give you a decent answer.

As far as them being anti-hunting I have no opinion either way as I have no knowledge either way.

How could a guy prove faulty advice given on a phone call?
You say yes...they say no...you lose

Look into arborist supply shops. I use one out of the pacific northwest (im exhausted, and forget the name), but they sell arborist specific saddles and climbing gear, and you can get rope by the foot, or a 100 or 150 foot for 90 bucks last i checked.
