Gentlemen (and Ladies),

As moderators of a huge forum like AT, you folks have a difficult and often thankless job to do....and you do it extremely well.....much tolerance is often shown to folks (and I am honest enough to admit I have been the beneficiary of that tolerance a few times during my nearly 2,000 posts).:embara:

My suggestion is very simple:

Though I have never been one for heaping rule after rule on people, there is one additional rule that, if implemented on AT, I believe would go a long way towards reducing the number of threads that just get totally out of control, resulting in some folks getting the "30-day vacation". :(

The new rule could read something similar to this:

"Creating intentionally inflammatory or provocative posts for the sole purpose of enticing other members into an emotional response is strictly prohibited."

That's a formal way of saying "No More Baiting".....

AT is "Archers helping Archers"....an intentional baiter should be considered EQUALLY as guilty as the person who breaks the "personal-attack" rule.

There's nothing funny....or cunning....or cute.....or entertaining.....about intentionally luring a fellow archer/bowhunter into "going-off" on someone...

Please kindly consider this request, as I am sure I speak for many, many folks on AT who would also like to see a reduction in baiting....

Thanks much for your hard work....:darkbeer:

I agree - but trolling is hard to legislate - it really becomes a judgement issue.

I wouldn't mind an addition. Should you bait/troll and its obvious - you get whatever comes your way. No whining that so and so is slamming you. If you toss the first brick - expect some return fire and as long as no physical threats are levied, come what may. IMO.

People will either defend themselves or learn to deal or quite possible learn to not sling the brick in the first place.

YMMV...

It is pretty much the rule. No bait and switch and no posting of anything harmful to anyone.

10. What may not be in a post is as follows: Material that is threatening, harrassing, or abusive to any party. Content that is defamatory, hateful, or in violation of any law is not tolerated. Knowingly posting false or misleading material will result in moderator action.

Hi Travis,

Thanks for responding! :)

Yes, #10 speaks to the issue in a rather round-about way.....but really doesn't spell-out the "trolling/baiting" problem specifically. Most of #10 refers to specific insults, etc, that are directed towards INDIVIDUALS, as opposed to general trolling/baiting with inflammatory remarks designed simply to get under people's skin and provoke a heated exchange.....

Yeah sure ... give up some more freedom in the name of "some" people's comfort zone. If you find a thread "baiting" and don't want to participate ... don't! By the same token a lot of people LIKE a little passionate discourse. Leave the "policing" to the moderators; they're doing just fine. This is exactly why you can't walk out your front door in this country anymore without being "socially engineered" by a zillion laws. If you can't stand the heat in the kitchen, etc, etc, etc.

If we locked or deleted every thread that got "heated" there wouldn't be much to read at times here. We try to give borderline threads the benefit of the doubt. When they start turning for the worse, we then act. Rest assured that when a thread gets locked, someone will get a warning or worse, dependant upon the situation.

I LOVE a little passionate discourse.....too much, sometimes!

I can take all the heat anyone on here cares to give....the problem is, I can also dish-out more heat that what the rules allow when I respond.....if I do, I should get the 30-day vacation.....BUT SO SHOULD THE GUY ON THE OTHER END OF THE "PASSIONATE DISCOURSE".....Agreed?

I agree completely, we cant pad the world in NERF and worry that every key stroke might offend someones tender sensibilities I find a little humor and sarcasm makes things more fun and interesting ...if I dont like a thread I dont read it or post in it ....

We can work with everyone on this, boardmembers need to help us as you did with the Dream Season thread today. When someone posts something that is obviously designed to tick people off just let us know, I talked with several members at length about that thread tonight and ended up shutting her down!! I would encourage you all to use the report post button, we DO look at those and use them as a way for us to know about bad threads/posts, we can not read everything. Thanks for the input guys!! i think it would be too hard to draw the line on what is baiting and what isnt.. my suggestion is that people just take things a little more light-heartedly. this site is good to learn and to help others, but one cant allow himself/herself to become consumed in all the trash-talking and what not that goes on in these forums. it is honestly enough to drive a guy nuts.. if you allow it to, that is.

I think the mods here make good decisions on when threads need to be closed for the most part.

I was in the middle of one yesterday that was got closed. I spent 10-15 minutes typing a long one in a WHA thread of course. Pushed the submit button and got the "sorry this thread has been closed message". Man thats annoying!

If this rule went into effect we would no longer receive any visits from OBT in the bowhunting forum.

"That there is funny I don't care who you are."

Sometimes they are obvious and should be stopped immediatly but sometimes they are just to take our minds off the long delay before hunting season. ex. OBT in hunting section in which we all know he is no hunter....

I guess if your here long enough you recognize the fun stuff but there is also the threads started to intentionally create ill will and those are the one's that need to be nipped. I think the mod's are gettin er done.

hey i got ripped for a false picture i believed in. i splained myself also then thread closed. no room for apologies or more ripping. what comes around goes around. i got nothing to hide, gain, or prove. this is all for entertainment and enlightenment. i think the moderators usually do what they need to. if a thread goes bad avoid it. if it entertains you keep watching the soap opera.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. What exactly is the problem?

If I could just add a friend-of-the-court kind of addendum to this thread.

TexasGuy, you want the Mods to be more specific about handling bait/trolling posts -

"Yes, #10 speaks to the issue in a rather round-about way.....but really doesn't spell-out the "trolling/baiting" problem specifically."

- but you havn't been specific about what exactly has prompted your original post. You have a vague problem but want a specific fix. Are you referring to political posts, bow limb problems, bad sellers/buyers - what? Demanding a fix your unnamed problem doesn't mean your problem will be fixed and that could (probably will) create more problems for members and Mods alike.

Regarding your, "I should get the 30-day vacation.....BUT SO SHOULD THE GUY ON THE OTHER END OF THE "PASSIONATE DISCOURSE".....Agreed?"

No, I don't agree. You lost it - you lose it. You're responsible for controlling yourself. Behave yourself and you won't have a problem.
