You really need to use 30AWG wire for the hack. You will be glad you did. 30AWG wire will finagle around inside the camera just fine but you will have trouble with larger wire. Also be sure to use "wire wrap" wire.
I don't know what you are using for the connector between your camera and the control board, but if you use the 4-wire servo such as supplied by Yeti, one side of that connector has 30AWG wire wrap wires on it and they are plenty long enough to do the hack. In fact, you will have to shorten some of the wires.
