This past weekend was the first time I used Scent Thief while hunting where I felt it actually came into play during my hunt. To clarify, I've been using it all season so far but up until this past weekend, I've been blessed with perfect winds for the stands I've hunted. Well, Friday evening and Saturday evening, the weatherman got it wrong (shocking, I know). Both evenings, the wind was the complete opposite wind direction forecasted and 180 degrees dead wrong for the stands I hunted. Not wanting to make a last minute stand change and get to that stand late, I decided to hunt those stands anyway and see if Scent Thief could deliver.
Both stands were on travel corridors (pinch points) between bedding and food. Both called for a NE wind, which was forecasted, but I had a SW wind. I sprayed myself down with Scent Thief before heading to the stand and then I sprayed myself and surrounding limbs/leaves when I got up into the stand. To make a long story short, on both evening hunts (with my Thermacell running as I watched the smoke from it blowing directly from me to the deer), I had deer (multiple does each time) at ranges from 16 yards to 40 yards directly down wind of me and I never got busted. I believe it was 100% because of the Scent Thief and here's why. Multiple does would, at times, throw their noses up in the air like they were trying to smell something. They were constantly licking their noses and continuing to scent check the air but never got skittish or alert to my presence. I don't know what else to attribute that to. Hell, the second night, not only was the wind dead wrong but given I was higher up a ridge and the does came in through a bottom below me, my thermals were also carrying my scent right down to them.
If anyone else can tell me what may have attributed to this, I'm all ears. All I know is I've been busted (more than I care to admit) in similar situations using other scent control/"scent elimination" products. This is my first season trying Scent Thief and so far, I have zero complaints and I'm beginning to build confidence in this product. I may try to the wafers next but as far as the field spray and laundry detergent, they're staying in the arsenal for the time being. I'm going to continue using it throughout the season. Right now, it's archery season and we don't have many people hunting around me but muzzeloader comes in on 10/1 and then rifle season opens 10/11. There will be a bunch more people in the woods then so we'll see how things go then.
