I believe it is to “zero” out the turret. Once you are sighted in you can take that screw out. Pull up and rotate the turret to “0”. Then replace the screw.
Scope question
I have an old XB 30 with the speed ring. The speed ring gets down low, which is why I bought it because it is on an old Browning Fury, running about 230 fps. Anyway I have been having trouble sighting it in. Not getting good repeatability. That being said, I opened up the turrets to adjust, and not paying attention, I loosened the tops. See the picture. That was before I figured out that they were not the reticle adjustment. What are those for? I did figure out all I need to do is turn the ring.

So I should make sure it is snug while sighting it in?
