47" Timber rattler. 10 rattles. Glad he warned me or I would have been in his kitchen within two more strides. I always knew hanging stands at the first of August could be dangerous with the sweltering heat, but this gives an all new meaning. Keep your eyes and ears open and wear those snake boots this time of year. A 9mm helps too... :darkbeer:

I'm sure that made for an interesting scouting trip. Probably got the heart rate up a little.

Ran into one last week on the National Forest. Was taking the new mountain bike for a test ride and scouting at the same time  and rode right past him. He didn't even have a chance to strike.

Can't say the same for the bee shortly there after that flew right up my shorts :pukey:

Rattlesnakes will always warn you and I know its hard to imagine but you could have walked around it just as easy as you killed it.

Was that 47" with or without the head?

I wasn't sure the correct way to measure one (if there even is a correct way). It was 47 inches from tip of head to base of rattles. Guess I could say he was a four-footer if I had counted the rattles.

a rattler will seldom rattle. if you pizz him off or poke at him with a stick or something he will. if you mind your own business, he will mind his. that one will make a great skin though. :)

Too close for comfort!

Already this year I have had a 21" copperhead brush my bare ankle, ( I had swimming shoes on). I was scouting on our lease and placed my foot down within 3" of a 30" cotton mouth, 10 paces further, another cotton mouth. I had my short boots on and I presented myself to both of the snakes and all they did was open that white mouth and hiss at me, they were much more interested in the frogs that were in the flooded road than me. On that scout trip I encountered 4 cotton mouths, two at close quarters.

Last year while putting up my stand, August, Hot, Frustrated, almost stepped on a three foot rattler twice. We have a lot of venom packing reptiles down here in Arkansas.

My opinion is leave them alone if they are not by camp or home. They serve a purpose in the woods. One is to give your heart that 15 minutes of aorobic exercise, at least thats what they do to me.

:)
