Im experimenting with game cameras for the first time. Anyone recommend an SD card reader that is compatible with an iPhone? Id like to be able to check the SD card right at the camera instead of doing a swap and returning to my laptop. Thanks.

Honestly, the Apple camera adapter. It’s more expensive than the generic versions, but it works as it should. I have 2 other cheaper versions that cause issues or just don’t work right most of the time. I use the adapter that has the charging port, usb port, so I can put a multi card reader into it. That way I can access my Sony cards as well as standard as cards.

I must have got lucky. I picked up an el cheapo off of amazon last year, plugs right into my phone and will take both micro and standard SD cards as well as having a USB male plug so that I can plug it into the computer if it doesnt have an SD slot or wont accept micro SD's. No app needed, just open up files, then select "Browse", then tap on the card when it pops up under locations.

Zero issues with mine. But its good to know if I ever have issues that the Apple branded one is a solid choice.

I have a cheapo reader and an Apple one. The difference is unmistakable. The cheapo works but feels like it is what it is…cheap. The Apple reader is what you’d expect from them and there’s no worry that it will corrupt or otherwise damage a good SD card.

Buy the Apple reader.

does your phone or computoer need a signal to use the apple reader?
I keep thinking about getting the Apple reader but if I need a signal to my phone it would not be any better then what I had and have now.

I do need a signal if using a card reader app. So I cannot use it right where I hunt, I would have to walk a hlf mile up on top of a hill to get a signal, even one bar

No. It just plugs in and you import the pics you want directly to your phone.

that is if you have a cell signal where your cameras are, in which for me is I do not..

otherwise trash your 5 game cameras cause you do not want to spend 15-20 bucks on a card reader. Spend maybe $400-600 on 5 cell cameras, then pay a monthly fee on each camera top of that to get those pictures.

and here you guys complain about the cost of bows..like the Virtue

No signal needed or used at all to transfer photos/ videos to phone. Only thing you need is enough battery power to power the adapter. If phone drops to 20% or so, it won’t work and the phone will tell you “not enough battery” to transfer or run the adapter.
I don't have any experience with that reader but it sounds like Apple's battery saver function isn't allowing it. I would venture to guess that if you turned off battery saver on your phone that it would work under 20% (the point at which battery saver kicks in, when turned on, and basically won't allow power hungry functions to work).

Save yourself the headache like many have mentioned and go with the apple card reader. Just know that if you use it like me, pull card and download all pictures to my phone and immediately put the card back in the camera, your photos app will get cluttered. I suggest either downloading all the photos on to a drive once you get home, or sorting through the photos and just keep a few that you want. Either way, do not cheap out on the adapter.

So, I have a question for the Apple Card reader users. I had an Apple Card reader a looooooong time ago. It was worthless because the only way to look at the pics on your phone was to download all of them onto your phone first, then look at them. When I use my phone, I just want to browse and see what's on the SD card, but not download the pics to my phone.

Do the newer Apple Card readers give a person the option to browse without actually downloading all the pics to the phone?

Is there a limit on card size with the Apple card reader? I've seen others max out with 32gb cards and that makes them useless to me. It doesn't even say on the Apple site, at least not that I could find. I'm a card swapper but this could be useful in a couple spots for me. Had one of the "other" brands years ago and it worked "ok."
