Shooting rage heads loose- ok?

I like the rage heads. I kind of had my heart set on them. I can’t achieve any kind of accuracy with them unless I shoot them fairly loose, about a quarter turn from even snug really. Just tight enough to hold the blades closed.

Any tighter and the blades stick out just a hair, like 1/32” I bet. But that little difference makes them zing all over the place.

I am worried about slinging a loose broadhead at a animal, what it might do.

Do any of you use a tiny oring or tiny washers between the shock collar and the head? What can I do?

Rage BH's are a highly volatile subject on AT.....a true love-hate topic. I don't shoot them....don't want to shoot them....but I don't really care if you do. However I must agree that your tuning should be good enough that a tiny bit of blade surface difference should not make them fly so poorly. Tuning with a fixed BH and then using a mechanical is a good way to go, if that is your choice for bowhunting. I shoot NAP Spitfires for turkey hunting, but primarily deer hunt with a couple different fixed heads.

Its not tuned perfectly by a pro or any of that but I have it pretty close. I can shoot a Montec and 4 field points right in there together, mostly touching. Smaller than my fist.

My rage heads will group too as long as they are not screwed in tight.

I think screwing them in tight is damaging the collar, and they are opening on just one side.

I have been shooting Rage Hypodermics for about 5 years and have never had a problem with them. I tighten them fairly snug, not loose like you mentioned. They fly great and have never had one open prematurely. Like another mentioned, if they stick out an additional 1/32”, then something else is amiss, either a tuning issue or form issue.

In about to post a picture. I totally get why a lot of you want to blame my form or whether my bow is tuned.

Even before I tuned my arrow rest so I can group the Montec together with my field points, I could still shoot a group with Montec all by themselves. Or field points all by themselves. Now they group pretty much together, maybe the Montec can be an outlier but not by more than an inch or so and only when I am shooting a REALLY good group. Most of the time I don’t shoot well enough to see that inch, they cluster together about fist sized.

Then I will shoot some rages, I have shot one rage dead center of the bulls eye and the next one barely hit my backstop! Waaaaay out there.

I’m not a rage hater I am bound and determined to kill something with a rage. I want that blood trail. I like the shock collar design I think it might actually open easier and penetrate better than a no collar design.

I would even be willing to turn my bow down to about 60 pounds if I thought it might help.

I will get y’all some pictures of those heads screwed in loose vs tight. I think mine are defective

I guess I am the only nerd that had a bad experience that is willing to mess with it until I get it right. I know these can be good heads. I have met a couple of lifelong bow hunters that will only shoot rage and nothing else.

I intend to use things I can replace locally without much hassle. That is pretty much just Rage, Montec, or some of the real cheap Allen heads and etc., some of the Muzzy stuff that do not appeal to me. I will use a Montec on turkeys this year but I have my heart set on using Rage for whitetails.

Here are two pictures, the one that is snugged down is on the right. Notice how the petals on the collar are flared out?

I hate rage but let me take a stab at it;)

Poor arrow construction and bow tune. The tighter you put the rage heads on the more run out they have resulting in the long ferrule catching more “wind” upon release compounded by an already crooked arrow coming off the bow.
Blunt but honest.
Are them both brand new never fired heads in the pic?

I don't shoot expandables. But what if you put alittle fingernail polish on the threads. That will keep them screwed in and not back out and you can dictate how far you screw them in. That picture helps alot, I would agree that you cannot tighten them down.

No, the heads have been fired probably four timesThe shock collars are new. But even new, that’s what mine looked like.

The very first one I fired almost missed my 2 foot target from about 15 yards. In fact, I used up all my shock collars and never had two hit within 6-8” of each other.

The first and only time I actually got them to group, I was using used shock collars and loose heads, lol.

I tried with new shock collars today with poor results.

Are the blades in the tip supposed to be wiggly?

Looking at your pictures, I see more clearly what you are talking about. With you screwing in the broadhead too far and squishing the collar too much, I really think a blade or both are opening inflight. Your other picture is more or less how I screw in my heads, but they are not at all loose. See my picture.

Like I mentioned before, I have never had a blade prematurely open inflight. For those that have had this happen, I’m wondering if you had the slits on shock collars lined up with the small hook on the blade. This hook is supposed to be between the slits on the shock collar.

With all this trouble rage is giving you, why is your heart set on them? Did you make a bulk purchase and afraid of losing the spent money?

My advice is to give up on these heads and get some that aren’t crap. There’s plenty of options out there for this style of head: Sevr, G5 Havoc, SIK has a model out, etc…

I use the things I can replace locally without hassle.

Now I also have a chance to validate some complaints about the rage heads, but also validate why others love them.

I put a new single pin sight on my bow this morning. I measured the distance from a nocked arrow for a starting point to dial in windage and elevation.

Here are my first three arrows at 20 yards with field points. I just bought these arrows on clearance for $28/6 pack lol Thank God. I’ve never managed to drill another arrow like that. Next three will be the rage heads.

I am sure some of that was me. For sure the first one I released with a Rage didn’t feel right this morning. But that’s not near as bad as I have been shooting these heads.

Still, that flies together with my field points good enough if you’re asking me. I’ll take it lol.

Now I am going to dial her in with these things and replace the blades. Going to use them on the first thing that comes in to my call for turkey season, hoping to see some predators!

Serving string still intact. I wouldn’t use it on a animal but my beat up old shock collar has one shot left in it.

This is at least the 7th shot on these beat up heads. Have impacted the dirt through the edge of the target and have impacted blades of other heads.

3 1/8” CTC grouping, I thought for sure these beat up old shock collars would come open on the shot. Guess I was wrong.

This is after taking the time to dial my new sight in perfectly with field points. Seems like I I normally put two of these rage heads together then one off to the right. But I am centered on there with field points, I will take it.

So if you had a bad experience with Rage heads zinging off your target, tie a piece of serving between the collar and the head.
