I have numerous buddies who will shoot sitting down in their treestand. I never shoot sitting down because for 1: it is uncomfortable, 2: I know people who have hit their bow limbs on different parts of the tree stand, and 3: I don't practice the position enough. Me personally if I am sitting down the first thing I do is stand up when I see a deer coming in my direction. What do you guys do?

My best friend insists on sitting down too. It's so easy to change your body alignment, anchor point, everything while sitting down compared to when you practice standing up. I, on the other hand, insist on standing up. You should shoot how you practice. Most people I know don't practice sitting down... So why shoot sitting down in your treestand? To each his own I guess.

I always stand. I don't have enough clearence in my Summit to shoot without hitting something. If you are in a hanging tree stand maybe its different?

It maybe be easier with a much much shorter ATA also (31 inches?) but it sure as hell ain't gonna happen with my Old Glory. I tried it once and the cam and bottom limb hit the side of the stand... I still haven't found that arrow

Why don't you make this a poll? I think the results would be intresting

My form is much much better while standing...However I have and will take shots while sitting down if the situation calls for it...But man is it hard to draw like that...!

I have found myself forced to shoot from a sitting position many times so I practice the shot regularly. I really don't mind at all because it feels like a very solid shooting position with minimal movement to spook game. However, for the most part when/if I see a deer approaching from a distance I generally will stand and prepare for the shot.

dead_eye_dave,
You should do what you've practised and disreguard what anyone else does.

If the next guy can shoot deer standing on his ear, that's great, but you won't see me doing it. :hand: It isn't a game of Twister, it's bowhunting and I intend to make the best shot possible....within my skill level.

Keeping your upper body in the same form as you do when you practise is important. Steep angles require a bowhunter to bend at the waist to maintain the same angle as you have shooting standing up and you can't do that sitting down. The treestand, your legs, clothes, etc. can interfere with properly shooting a bow, when sitting, so it is best to stand.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

I used to always shoot standing up but my lower back won't let me stand for any length of time now without shuffling around - way too much movement. So, the last couple of years I sit most of the time but I also practice while sitting (our club has an elevated stand to practice out of so that helps). I've mounted a no-peep and it definitely lets me know if I'm not lined up properly....

I have trained myself to actually stand all day long except for every few hours when I lean on the seat to rest my legs and back. I've been surprised from behind or off to one side too many times that I just don't feel comfortable setting down too much anymore. If I'm standing, I can react much easier to these surprises and don't miss any shot opportunities now.

So, to answer your question, I always shoot standing up.

If I can stand without being seen, I will. If not I shoot on my sitting. I do shoot some thru the summer out of a chair.

I shoot traditional bows and have killed deer sitting and standing. It is all in how you practice. With my style of bow, it is not as critical what the angle of my bow is as opposed to a compound with sights that you have to shoot in a vertical position. The ability to cant my bow to whatever angle I need to shoot has come in handy more than once.

I try to stand up when I see a deer, or at first light and when it is getting dusk. I like to shoot standing, however, I shot my largest buck while sitting because I was in a Loc on stand and it was so high that I was afraid to stand up.

Both...It depends on whether I can stand up when the deer come in.

Shooting while setting is one of those things you have to practice. I would rather shoot while setting than standing...I shoot both ways and practice both ways....it's that simple...

last year, i shot 2 of my 3 kills were sitting down. i just practice from both . i don't have a preference, but do prefer though, to keeping my bow on my lap nearly all the time. this is because it is quicker to access.
