Ok. Most of the Perfexs are sold out. The ONNEX is the only resistance I have held and used.(my boys releases)
There are Elements still available on sale.

Main question is if I plan on hunting with this should I just give up and plan on spending enough to get an ONNEX?
It has the d-loop keeper.

Anyone with experience on the elements? All I see left are mediums in the heavy version and large on the light version.
I wear an X large glove. I was thinking John Dudley likes the mini evolution as it will only slip on the first part of his index finger.
But that is an entirely different release/company.

I have used an index wrist strap for close to 40 years. Any thoughts from those with experience?

I have a medium Element 4 finger and a large Perfex resistance. They both fit well and I wear an XL glove as well. I can squeeze into the occasional Large, but in vinyl mechanic gloves, has to be an XL. Hope that helps.

I find myself wishing the element was a 3 finger, but I shoot it just as well as the perfex with the 3 finger setup. I prefer the heavy metal (element is HM), but the perfex still has enough heft in non-HM to feel excellent in my hand. The one thing I do NOT like about the onnex and perfex is the open index finger. I like the complete loop on the element much better. I will be buying another perfex, in HM Large, or a Onnex the same way, and probably use it primarily, though the element and regular perfex will be shot plenty, I'm sure.

One other con for the element is the lack of lanyard attachment. The perfex wins there. The onnex doesn't have that, either.

I have 2 Perfex releases. I also had my friends OnneX for a week to try. They are basically the same release except the index finger part of the OnneX loops around a little more and also the OnneX does not have a hole for a lanyard attachment. Why it doesn't is beyond me. They really dropped the ball on that one. A hole could be drilled in the trigger reset switch though if someone really needed a lanyard like me as I have already lost 2 Perfex's while hunting.

Good luck with that. I just went through trying to buy one and they just can't be found. I just happened to be on the classifieds in here the second one popped up and I jumped on it. Otherwise I'd still be looking. They stopped making the Perfex from what I understand.

^^^^^^THIS^^^^

I also have 2 Perfex thumb and 1 Perfex resistance. I couldn't believe they went 100% indoor-ish, with a great hunting release.

Like BucksNBulls I added a thin reflective cord as a lanyard for the following reasons:
  • It's on my wrist when I am on the approach to a stalk etc ready to go.
  • it's way easier to find when dropped
  • At night a headlight quickly reveals the reflective cord.
  • It's actually easier when put in my pocket with the cord hanging out, to pull from my pocket or same when practicing a hip quiver (use the bow-mounted quiver when hunting)
Lastly this one I never planned, and hate to admit it; but I was fiddling at full draw, wanted to look at an uncut arrow to see if I had room for a lopper, and stupidly pulled the bow away from my anchor and at full draw looked at the bow off to my side. All was fine until I lost concentration on the way back to my anchor, the bow came out of the valley, ripped the release from my hand (again not focused), and tried to launch the release. The wrist lanyard certainly saved the bow and didn't let the arrow launch very far avoiding potential issues. That said, crap, it actually hurt like the dickens when the lanyard hit the back of my hand (it is never very tight around my wrist/hand).

My nephew let go of a hand held. He was used to a strap. It went forward came back hit him under his bottom lip. Put a half inch hole in his lip. Drove his two middle teeth back half an inch. Dentist reset them and gave him a 50/50 chance of keeping them. Luckily he saved them. The release went about 25 yards after hitting his face.
Wrist straps are/should be a necessity or option. I would think a resistance release would come free on the way forward. My nephews thumb release probably didn’t come loose until on the way back or even when it hit his face.

I think the D loop keeper is a step towards hunters, but no lanyard hole stinks. I am wondering if they even left it off to put it on as an upgrade later?

So $149-$159 for an element and $279-$300 for the Onnex.
I have never hunted with hand held. Is the D loop keeper worth $150? Or get an element and figure out how to rig a wrist strap? Do most leave hand held on d loop? Or wrist strap it?

Probably not, but to each their own. No judgements here.
I haven't had mine long enough to decide if I care it won't stay on the dloop, but that's why I like the enclosed index finger on the element. I have a solid clip screwed on my quiver that it snaps into and doesn't move or make a sound when walking around, grabbing it for a shot, etc, and will probably grab another for my belt.
The wrist strap on it is the difficult part, but I haven't started figuring that one out yet. I think the perfex will get the primary for hunting nod, and truglo makes a Boa laced wrist strap I think I'm gonna get.

Thanks for all of the info. I really appreciate the help. Like teaching an old dog new tricks. My boys have hunted with a tru ball TRex and have no complaints. It does have the strap on it though. I just really hope they don’t lose their ONNEXs.

I have a Morex, JustX, two original short-neck Perfex's, a Perfex Resistance, one long-neck Heavy Metal Perfex, and I just bought a Heavy Metal Onnex. I think it's fair to say I love Stan releases :). That said and for what it's worth, here are some thoughts. The Heavy Metal Perfex is my all-time favorite. Hard to explain, but it just fits. I am underwhelmed by the Onnex; it is too heavy, about 1 1/2oz heavier than the Perfex. The finger beds and the head length are identical to the Perfex but the case is larger, leading to a bulkier feel in my hand. The hook angle on the Onnex is a little different than the Perfex, but I haven't shot it enough yet to form an opinion on how easily it hooks up to the d-loop. Stan says the internals of the Onnex are better, but my Perfex's have never failed me. I need a backup, so I have to more seriously look at the aluminum Onnex before I return the HM.

Re the lanyard situation, it is a non-issue for me. I am primarily an elk hunter and I rarely have to execute a quick shot. For me, a lanyard on a hand-held release is worse than an index release with the wrist strap. It flops around, gets caught on stuff, comes out of wherever you have it tucked away when you least expect it, and is just a PITA. I took the lanyard off my Perfex and now keep it in my lower pants pocket, zipped and secure. It is right at arms length and I can get at it pretty quickly if I really need to. There is no chance of the thing, hanging on a lanyard, hitting a bow limb and spooking a big bull (don't ask me how I know:)). However, I recently learned about AJB Holsters and his product looks like an interesting alternative to the pants pocket.

My favorite release is the Stan Shootoff heavy metal, it is my go to 3D release (I just bought a second one because my son keeps using mine) but I don't hunt with it because I have dropped it out of the tree a couple of times. I hunt with a Scott Shark index with a buckle strap. I have shot 3-d with the Scott and my scores do not vary much at all. I see no advantage to using a thumb release for hunting for me (10-30 yard tree stand deer). I can shoot the same bow with both and don't have to adjust anything. It's more about form than the release

I have a Perfex L longneck and an Elemnt L. It’s a great one two punch. I use the Elemnt to work on form and do most my shootin with the Perfex. If you can find them on sale I wouldn’t hesitate. I think I bought the Elemnt for around $100 here in the classifieds.
