I went from a index release to a thumb release this past season (Tru Ball T Rex). Looking to upgrade. The T Rex is ok but I feel it could be improved. I think I’ve narrowed it down to the Stan SX3 Heavy Metal. Anyone who has used one, what’s your thoughts?

The SX3 HM would be an excellent upgrade from the T-Rex. The handle of the T-Rex is comparable to a SX3 4-finger Medium. The trigger on the SX3 is crisper and can be adjusted to a greater range of tensions. You still have to push the hook closed after you press the cocking button, but you should already be used to that with the T-Rex.

I own three Stan SX3 releases....been shooting them for the past 5 years or so. One is my daily shooter, one lives in my hunting bow case and the last one lives in my hunting pack as a backup. They get rotated every year to spread out the usage. However I have never handled the heavy metal version to compare.....maybe out of self-preservation....LOL. If I thought it was a bit better, I would have to resell the three I own and start shopping the AT classifieds for every HM in sight. The SX3 is an excellent release and well worth the investment.

I also have 3 SX3's, two regular and one heavy metal. I have shot a thumb release for 10 years and always liked the Stan the best because of all the releases I have tried it has the best zero travel setting. I just got the Heavy Metal this fall and like it the best, the standard release is good but the HM feels that much better to me. Also have had great customer service from Stan when I've needed a part or had a question. If you get it I think you will be very pleased. Good luck.

I've had the SX2 and currently have the SX3 (spare) and PerfeX Stan releases. No flies on the SX2 and SX3 but for hunting the PerfeX I believe is the best. Just because of the added feature of the spring loaded string keeper. It also has a spring return jaw to automatically close. The SX3 has to be manually closed after the release is reset. Which isn't a big deal if you're stand hunting. Whichever model you choose you can't go wrong.

You can also overlay the releases on the Stan website to compare sizes. Super useful tool. I would say the Perfex LN is a better option because of the hook connect option and far more adjustability. You can really dial in the feel of almost everything.

I have and use the sx3 and love it target practicing. I dont like it so much hunting though. I draw back with my thumb behind the release and then find it hard to get my thumb to the other side with hunting clothes on. Once i hit trigger by accident,.....missed that deer.

I had this fear with it too actually. But I practiced in full clothing with it and that cut my fears with practice. But yes, if your wearing a lot of clothing you need to be aware and maybe practice this. No problems for me in the end.

This is good information to know.
I have a Stan SX3 and love it.
Been trying to justify the "upgrade" to a Perfex.
When I went to the Stan site and compared overlays, the SX3 large, and Perfex large Long Nose, seemed the same length of the catch/release.
However, you guys who have actually handled the physical hardware are saying differently?

Hmmm.. y’all have me interested in a perfex instead now. Looks very similar to the sx3. I like that the reset closes the release. I’m not a big fan of doing that by hand on my T. rex, and y’all say the sx3 is the same way. I also like how you can change out the fingers on the perfex for a 3 or 4 finger grip. Now sizing is the question. I wear a large in gloves so should I get the large perfex with long neck?

I wear 2x-3x gloves depending on the material. I bought the largest releases made in the SX3 and PerfeX. They seem still a touch small in my hands but those are all the options available to me.

If you can try them in person that would be the best. If not, order from whichever place that will take a no-charge return or restocking fee. Order two releases in different sizes. See which one fits the best and return the other.

I've had no issue shooting the SX3 with a spandoflage facemask because it is form-fitting and isn't bulky. Same with the tube-type neck gaiters that can be pulled up to serve as an ear covering/face mask. I got one of that style from a local farm-home store in black to wear inside my popup blind for turkey hunting this spring and ended up buying a couple more in multicam off ebay to keep in my bow case during hunting season. Indeed, either leave your top couple buttons undone or zipped down or tuck in your collar and you won't have an issue.

As for Stan sizing, I wear an Lg/XL glove and shoot the large SX3. I always wear a glove on my bow hand, but during hunting I cut the finger stalls off my release hand glove so the bulk of the surface is covered but I have bare fingers for release operation. Sure, your release will get cold in cold weather, but a handwarmer in your pocket will keep you fully functional and when a deer steps out you don't even feel your release. Rather like the recoil of a rifle is totally a moot point when shooting at a nice buck.

Bought the T-Rex as a christmas gift for my wife. Of course I tested it out. I by far prefer my SX3 Heavy. The feel in my hand is better and I like the trigger more. Once one gets used to setting the SX3 caliper one handed, I like that better too.
