I’m having a difficult time deciding between my Stan Onnex thumb release and my Spot Hogg Wiseguy index release for hunting. I love both releases for different reasons.

Im not looking for alternative release options, but would love thoughts from you all on why one wins out over the other for tree stand bow hunting!

Be specific! I want strong opinions! Not, “do what you feel is best answers.”

I have the same two releases. Once I started shooting a thumb release I quit shooting the index. I love having my hands/wrist free. I come to anchor faster and more naturally with the handheld. And when I have a flier, it’s much closer to my group with the thumb than the index. Thankfully, I can switch back and forth without changing peep

The wiseguy is one of my favorites, I have hunted with them a bunch. It really is personal preference, I have not hunted with the onnex but have with the shootoff and several other thumb buttons.

I don’t like hunting with thumb buttons. I just like index release for the woods, and I have found the trick to shooting them well is keeping discipline in your practice, be deliberate every arrow… it’s worth it to me, and after shooting thumb buttons enough, they are just as easy to punch.

if the wiseguy had a stiffer trigger for off season practice, it would be the perfect release for my taste

“Be deliberate with every arrow!” That is what I find to be mandatory with the Wiseguy. I can shoot them both about equal, but with the Wiseguy I really need to be deliberate. When I am, it’s a very great release and seems more comfortable for me in the stand. I’ve been shooting index releases for 20+ years. It’s hard to think of switching… but on the other hand, that onnex is one hell of a release too. I am super comfortable with it on the ground.

I shoot a Wiseguy and I don't plan on changing any time soon. I've tried many different handheld thumb releases and I shot them well, but I wasn't as consistent as I am with the Wiseguy. I realize I'm probably in the minority of those that prefer index to thumb release but I'm sticking with what I'm the most confident and consistent in.
