WV None. I find that if there is any sort of physical excertion involved in getting to it, it is usually left alone. I normally dont leave a hang on in an easy to access area. The mtns here are steep and thicker than pea soup. Most of my hang on's are in pretty nasty places.

I'm lucky in the fact that the farm I hunt is owned by some good ole' boys. I wouldnt want to get caught on it without permission. Mark and Tom have a reputation to whoop some butt if they catch ya. I'm the ONLY person who hunts the land, and am under strict rules. If I see someone else on their property, I am to call them immediately. Never even have had to worry about my stands since I started hunting this farm

I've never had any taken yet. For the most part they're hung on private land. Many people have permission to hunt it but it's all family and close friends. Luckily everyone is on the same page with stealing treestands and such. I refuse to do it to them and they won't do it to me.
I've left my climber on public land many times though, mainly after an afternoon hunt and i planned on returning the next morning.

I had a hang on taken from land I hunt on. I dont so much care about the loss of the $100 as much as I just want to find the jerk that stole from me. I wanna break his legs. I should have made it harder for him.

I don't trust people that I don't know. I always use a climber and it gets packed out with me. Only time I've ever left a stand in the woods was last year, the stand was 30 yards off my neighbors back yard and easily seen. Other then that, never.

Never had one stolen...But I did have two stands vandalized by an adjoining landowner that felt I was hunting too close to his property line...And this by the same moron that I allowed to drive his truck onto our farm in order to retrieve a doe he had shot with a rifle...Needless to say we are not on speaking terms anymore...!

bowhuntTuT,
I've never had a treestand stolen, because they're on my back or I'm in it in a tree. Leaving a stand is either asking for someone to steal it or just plain laziness. :hand: I'll pass on both counts.

I live in the "state" of reality. If a thief wants to take your stand it will be stolen. :frusty: Irreguardless of how difficult it is to get to, how well chained, locked or otherwise secured, on private or public property.....if it can be stolen it will be stolen.

* I don't leave stands up because I don't want them stolen.
* I don't leave stands up because the weather is hard on the stand.
* I don't leave stands up because critters chew on the stand.
* I don't leave stands up because I don't want anyone knowing that I'm hunting that area and setting up next to me.

Good luck with your choices!
Good hunting, Bowhunter57

I'm In virginia and have had one stolen few years back. But I noticed at dick's sporting goods this year they have treestand locks...so I bought a couple becouse I use summit climbers and even though its been many years since I had one stolen just means my number is coming up again soon and who ever tried from now on are gonna have to have some serious equipment to get my stuff down from now on! The locks are made by Masterlock so very reliable name in locking devises! I suggest the same for everyone Might be able to get them from dick's sporting goods online! I have found it is better to spend $10 to make sure a $200+ stands stay where they are supposed to!

In Wi. I had a climber and a camera stole the morning of a t-zone hunt which is doe only and I hunt on private land. I hunted the night before and was planning to hunt that afternoon but to my dimay everything was gone and I even hid the stand in what i thought was a good spot, but them god d*** tresspassers taught me a good lesson.. Funny thing is I thought I was safe considering that nothing of mine had ever been stolen in the ten years I'd been hunting this property. live and learn. It's a different world now. Don't trust anyone!!!!

i hunt public land and i have never had a stand stolen. i hunt harder than most so all of mine are in the thick nasty stuff. and i use strap on steps and take them down when i come down so it is harder for them to be alerted to the presence of a stand cause they see no steps and they cant get up there unless they bring their own steps.

we also have areas in south texas and on the gulf of mexico that has really short bushes. usually nothing over about 10 ft at the max so i designed (and sell) a tripod for that area that would avert theives. the swivel chair and legs part are separate so you can leave the legs in the brush and take the chair out when you leave. the 13ft stand only weighs about 50lbs and the 7ft only weighs about 32 lbs. but if a theif sees just legs and no chair they would have no reason to steal it. unless of course they were fabricators and knew they could build a chair for it. but then again most fabricators would rather build their own then steal.

believe it was on the realtree forums last year, someone had a trail can pick of a guy coming onto private land with his climber on his back, on the way in pic showed him looking at the guys stand and on the way out, looking right past the trail camera.

The count is 2 and better not be climbing. This is on my own property adjoing landowner leasing mobile home to some creep who is inviting people to hunt the property with no concern of any type for the boundaries. All stands are now locked and it just makes me sick. I am now gonig to have to post the heck out of my place which I haven't had to do in the previous 10 years I have owned the place.Unfortunately I seem to have hard time catching them but they keep leaving clues to their presence in form of litter etc. My father in law who lives at the place now 80 years old and still hunts had set up a stand with an aluminum ladder and it was chained the thieves used bolt cutters and stole ladder we almost caught them as they were in such a hurry to get out of there they left their bolt cutters against the tree. I don't get the time to enjoy my place as much as I used to and it just sickens me that now when I go up I have to spend half my time patrolling my place. I have found their stands etc and while some may say I should just take them that would lower me to their level. I get plastic bag and enclose handwritten note giving them a week to move that stand if it isn't moved or they can' read I take the stand down and leave it at base of tree. But one of these times I'm going to BLOW. I am now paying the surveyor to come paint every tree that borders this property line I hate fences but if I catch the blankety blanks. They will be paying for and installing the fence on my boundary. I think that would be fair punishment it is a long boundary. The worst part is the chicken blank when I go up to house to confront is never there even though truck and other cars their so he sends his young maybe 12 year old son to door. Sorry just can't get mad at son he didn't do anything then son tells me about large buck shot back by pond so I go check out area find no sign of stand anywhere so walking down cut road 300 yards into my place and their i find trailing tape follow trailing tape to gut pile and plastic bags wrappers etc . find blood trail follow in reverse find what apears to be first blood their is stand me and my son spent months setting up based on sign for my daughter to sit in opening morning of gun( she is full time student can only get liitle time off)and this stand is more than solidly on MY PLACE. And You good people here on this site wonder why it is sometimes so hard to get permission to hunt private property. My suggestion if You get permission to hunt someone land is that boundary maps are available at the city hall, Note they may not be available to You however if this person is the land owner he should provide them to You for Your own sake if he happens to be rentor of house on property he can contact the owner and get them they are Free. When I have given permission I always take the time to walk my guests around the place to insure they know and understand the boundaries. I also inform them if I catch wind of them trespassing onto someone else's land from mine they will not be welcome back. There are some really bad apples out there that are ruining it for all the good people on this site? These are same people that give all of us hunters a Bad name. We all need to report any violations seen to authorities everyone working together will help open doors that may have been closed for a long time. I know if this continues I too will have to close the door and leasing everywhere will become reality.
Sorry to blow but the stolen stand issue is a very sore spot with me.
