So I was out yesterday morning and watched a fox run up to the trail I walked in on. Once he got to the trail, he stopped immediately and turned around and went back to where he came from. 10 minutes later he comes back about 30yds from the original spot and comes to the trail I walked on. Again, he stops at the trail, this time turning around and running away. He obviously picked up my scent

Fast Forward to an hour later when a doe and fawn come down the same spot as the fox came on the 2nd time. They didn't have a care in the world and walked out giving me a perfect 15yd shot (I took the big doe).

So is it a foregone conclusion that the fox has the better nose?

i would say you are correct.

Not sure which one would win in a test but the fox had the advantage in that scenario by being closer to the ground I'd say.
A deer would probably pick up your scent if you were in a tree stand first.

I predator hunt (fox, coyote) after deer hunting is done and I can tell you from personal experience that canines definately have better noses than deer. I put ALOT more effort into scent and playing the wind with dogs over deer.
