This thread is not meant to start a debate over high fence hunting. I like it from time to time just to get out and have a great time with friends and family. I am heading to Wilderness Hunting Lodge for a second time. We will be hunting April 12-14 and I am looking at taking a ram of some sorts. I think I have it between a Texas Dall and a Black Hawaiian. I just want something that looks good on the wall, tastes good and has a great set of horns. Anyone know which one gets bigger horns? Let me know what you think I should shoot. Any input is appreciated.

Please no basing about high fence. It has it's place. I am taking a couple of cousins who are new hunters and this is a good way to break them in. Plus if you have ever been to Wilderness Hunting Lodge in Tennessee then you know it is a blast!!

Thanks for the help.

Went on a low fence hunt for these in TX once. Had a great time and wouldn't have cared either way if it was low fence or high fence. Since being there, they have put in a high fence.

We say both TX Dalls and Black HIs. For some reason I was drawn to the Blacks...just thought they looked cool. Got one shot at one and shot way high...due to a slipped serving! Partner killed a nice TX Dall and it looks very cool on the wall. If I was going back, either would be a cool kill, IMO.

do yourself a favor..............shoot both! ya they both a cool, my son shot a dall, ...i shot a strawberry ram. they look cool on the wall, but you will be suprised how small thier body size is!

Highfence haters just don't realize every game animal is confined somehow.....

Keep up the thoughts guys! Thanks.

honsetly, the size of their horns are the same. the only difference is the color of their coat. sometimes you will see one with a real wide spread, but
both types can have a wide spread. i went there once and shot a barbarossa (merino) ram (cause it had a wide spread), and a texas dall. they were both white. here is the texas dall. i have the other one at home on the other computer. they make cool mounts.

I had that option last year and shot me a TX doll. It came down to the simple fact that i was in TX and I might as well get the TX doll. It just made sense to me. If I was in Hawaii I would rather hunt the black, LOL The coat washed up super good.

Nice rams guys, how did they taste?

V-Train, what time of year did you shoot your Dall at Wilderness Hunting Lodge? It has a nice coat.

i have been there 2 times. i went the first time labor day, there were alot of people there, but 90% of them were bow hunting so it was not bad.
the second time i went, the weekend before labor day, we almost had the place to ourselves. i think that is a good time, other than the heat, cause
the deer speices they have are in velvet, or out of it. it is neat to walk around and see elk, fallow, sitka, red stag and axis deer. my wife killed a blackbuck
and a fallow deer. those black bucks are tiny, i don't think it weighed much over 100 lbs. was neat, she shot that with her bow, and fallow with a gun.
it has been at least 5 to 7 years since i have been there. i know they have more land now than they had when i went. they had about 3,000 acers when i was there, which is plenty. they had just started building that big log home that they have on their site.

Here it Is!

Well Tried to find my pics of the mounts...but had no luck! oh well!
This was my first Sheep...(a corsican when i was about 9 in Michigan)

This is a Texas Dall and Corsican(These were from Texas and were PRICEY)(this was November)

Next is a Black Hawaian from that same trip(I about 12)

Here is another Texas Dall(this was summer and I was about 14)

Here is my dad with a Desert Sheep(same hunt as above...Check out his AWESOME Hoyt...lol)

From my experience sheep isnt very good to Eat!...Generally we never ate it! They all look good on the wall and are very fun to Hunt!

man, those are all great ones. i forgot about the Corsicans. my wife got one with her bow also, but it was not as big (wide) as yours.
i will try and find the picture of the barbarossa ram i got, it is wide like the rams you guys got. i actually passed on a real wide texas
dall, to shoot the one i got. the wide dall, looked alot like the one i already had, plus the way the curl was it looked like a big horn sheep.
i really want to go get one of those big mouflon sheep, they got some big, cool looking horns.

I would likely side with the black hawaian, just really like the way they look but a nice dall with that big fluffy white coat would be sweet as well.

I shot a corsican 2 or 3 years ago and depending on how we cooked it some of the meat was really good. We found the ground meat took spice really well like in chili and tacos, the ribs dried out when we tried to barbecue them, backstraps were really good grilled, and we did one hind quarter injected with pineable juice and marinated in teriyaki that was banging! As I said depending how it was cooked it turned out pretty good, but some things we tried were really not that great.

I'm really not into the Sheep though I have a couple from past Bowhunts. I've only bowhunted what they call Day-lease places so price is always the same. There IS a Ram Slam which consists of (I think) Black Hawaian, Texas Dall, Mouflan & Corsican. I would shoot a GOOD Texas Dall if I had the chance as they seem more impressive to me than the black.. Meat (to me) is not good & I gave mine to families that liked Sheep Meat. Good Luck..It's always fun.

I shot a Barbado ( a ram mix ) back in 89' and a Texas Dall in 91'. The first ram I had cut up as you would a deer chops, ground, and stew the second was made into sausage. I prefered the sausage and ground (tacos mostly). Check out the recipies on Texasbowhunter.com they have some very interesting looking recipies that I plan on using when kill a ram this year. By the way I had both mounted (1st one was pretty good just got eatin by bugs(?) and started loosing hair...Tx Dall taxidermist did crappy job...horns tilted foward @ bases and eyes wrong size for form ! ) Just have your taxidermist PICKED OUT before you go JMO. Otherwise you will have a great time and come home with an fantastic trophy for your wall with either ram.;)

Went on a Ram hunt this year, enjoyed it. I could have shot a Texas doll or a Black Hawaiian, decided on the BH, had bigger horns, waiting on it to get back from Taxidermist now
Nice Ram. Post a picture of it when you get it back from the taxidermist. You dont seem to see as many of these mounted.

Very nice V-Train. Did you have the taxidermist there at Wilderness do your mounts? They look great! I had them do my hog and it turned out great.

yea, they did them all. i got prices from people here before i went. they were only like $40 or $50 more, mainly due to freight. it is worth it, cause you don't have to
worry about rushing hope to get them to a taxidermist. Allen's (the owner) brother runs the taxidermist shop. they did a great job, i wish i could find that picture of
that merino. it was so dirty when i got it, almost brown, they were really able to get the coat solid white. i could not believe it.
