I guess I'm an oddball...

I set the head/trigger reach of my release super short... where I can wrap my index finger around the trigger and touch my thumb, and my index just rests on the trigger without it going off. I use my thumb to lock my index finger from squeezing the trigger. Then I execute using back tension.

It works very well for me, I shoot this method better than I ever shot a thumb. And I'm using a cheap Scott Quick-Shot release... I wanted something on a rope so I could set it up really short.

Same release same technique here. I initially wanted a rope release for less torque but found the additional benefit of shortening it. Surely all in my head, but it all works for me and my fellow oddball.

Very true.

I just base my comments on what ive seen him do, consistently making perfect shots on animals, the long range practice, etc. To me that’s good shooting for a guy that only hunts i guess.

You don't need competition trophies to be considered one of the best. It's just VERY popular to hate on Cameron Hanes.

From what I gather about Cam is that he is involved in a lot of stuff. Archery, and Cross Fit (or something like it) with bow hunting being his primary thing for archery. He does achieve a very high level of accuracy from very long ranges. I have seen him make 100+ yard shots on some of his videos, and shoot very tight 100+ yard groupings. Now, because hunting is his thing, he practices with hunting in mind. He shoots a high poundage (80lbs) bow, and shoots a few very accurate shots. Then he puts his bow away and repeats another day. No doubt he is plenty good to ethically harvest game. Does he have the skill and mental chops to clean a 3D course? In hunter class IBO or known hunter class in ASA I would suspect he could shoot even or close to it. It would be interesting to see him run an open setup and how he stacks up in MBO or the ASA equivalent. But that's not really his thing. It seems like he has reached a point in his archery career where he is happy doing what he is doing, how he is doing it, and that's it.

It would be cool to see him give some competitive archery a try though.

There was a video of him at the mtn ops challenge shoot. He pretty much shot 10s and 12s all day long from 15-120 yards. Guys can hate em all they want but old boy can shoot!

I'm gonna have to get it together. Only kill between 18-25 deer a year and a few hogs that wonder by several coyotes and foxes. I punch triggers, use heavy draw weight, probably bad form to some. Fellow members I admit I haven't never shot a target for score. Paper plate on a haybale,or a glendel buck for broadhead trial. So there isn't a title in my league,or points but I kill alot of animals with my technique.

I also use the wise guy release and wondered how Cameron could be so accurate when it seems like he's punching the trigger. What works for him works, but not for me. I just slowly squeeze on the target and I'm happy with my groupings. I do wish I was able to practice at long range distances like him (i.e. up to 160 yds). 90 is the furthest I can get to at my local archery range.

Not sure why you would want your thumb behind your neck, IMO your anchor is the easier part, your bow arm shoulder and grip is the more difficult part. As said though it works for him as he is one of the best shots out there.

Animals on the ground = shooting trophies

Works for him, that’s all that matters. I have a lot of respect for his work ethic and his humility. His story is one of the reasons that I became interested in archery. Good solid dude.

Why in God's name would you shoot 18-25 deer in a year?

Yes this will greatly increase your draw length with thumb on the back of your neck
I understand how this may affect your anchor point....but how does it have any effect on your draw length?
