well if you guys want to know the details that got us to this point in the story, you can check out the thread titled "help tracking a neck shot buck". so anyways, we got on the trail that we thought the buck was taking and set up a plan with two guys posted and two guys checking through a thick willow marsh. he was exactly where we thought he would be. at about 4:00 pm, i looked up and he was 2 feet in front of me, it was honestly that thick. i watched him for about 20 seconds... he was laying on his side with his head on the ground, his eyes were open, and i never saw him breathe. i knew he was dead so i yelled to my buddy to come over and check out his 150" buck. we yelled back and forth a few times, then i turned back to the buck.. he stumbled to his feet and took off. i got one shot off that somehow got through the brush but i shot a little behind him. no more blood, no more deer. we walked everything we could for the next 3 hours with no sign anywhere.
i have never felt so bad about anything in my whole bowhunting life. it would have been one thing if it was my own deer, but it was my buddy's biggest of his life. he said dont worry about it, he would have done the same thing, but it doesnt help the way i feel. i must have aplogized at least 100 times. ive never walked up on a deer that did that before, so i guess i learned a big time lesson the hard way.
so now i wont be doing any hunting of my own this week, only doing everything in my power to find his deer that i should have had hanging in the garage by now. he hasnt run any further than 150 or so yards in a straight line since he was hit, so im gonna cover every square inch of the marsh and every surrounding area in the next couple days.
sorry for the lengthy and depressing post, i just had to cry about this horrible experience a little bit. maybe it will still have a happy ending... who knows. and please dont flame him or me about any of this because i already feel bad enough.. great start to the season, huh? a few serious lessons learned if nothing else i guess...
thanks for reading,
nick
