I've never shot 3D, nor do I know anybody who does. I was wondering, in general, what ranges are you typically shooting at tournaments? Is there typically an option to shoot at closer ranges if you want? I wouldn't shoot much past 40 yds-- I don't feel like buying up a bunch of arrows.
I'm not looking to get real serious. I plan on shooting my hunting setup and hope to not get beat up on by too many 12 y/o girls! I just want one more excuse to tinker with my bow and get out and shoot more.
Thanks for any info.

I think You will find the benefits and confidence building that shooting 3d does for your hunting to be very worthwile. The ranges are going to be dictated by your equipment shince, If you use 4 inch fletch and screw in arrow points, less than a 12 inch stabilizer and fixed pins then You will be placed in the bowhunter division. I have not experienced a shot in this division that exceeded 40 yds. You will probably find most shot in the 27-35 yds range. I too like you was concerned about losing arrows at first, However I have my arrows set up with EZ crest arrow wraps and have not lost an arrow since ( ive broken a couple ) . Just watch out ; it is addictive and I think You will be really glad You tried it out. Great friends to be made and a fun time. There are plenty of people that shoot these for hunting practice so don't worry about score just have fun.

IBO has a hunter class at 35 yards max. Go to a local shoot and get into a group with a few guys that know the ropes. They'll help you out and you'll be hooked. Don't concern yourself with scores and what-not, just have a good time and enjoy the shoot.

If local clubs go by IBO rules, then you can go to ibo.net and click on rules. Then you can find rules for classes, scoring, etc. I think you will enjoy this type of shooting. When I shot my first 3D shoot 4 targets into the course someone ask, "what do you think" and I said I`m hooked. That was 20 years ago. Have fun.

I shoot 2" Blazers, can I still qualify for the Bowhunter division in most cases? I appreciate the reply.
Not in the IBO. Vane length in the Hunter Class has to be 4 inches or longer. If you want to shoot Blazers, you'll have to step back 10 yards to 45 and shoot the MBR class.

Around here the only limit for hunter class is 12" stabilizer, non moveable sight without magnification. Most of our local shoots are real informal. Just be warned, 3-D is very addictive, once hooked there isn't enough time or money to shoot all you will want to.

Hope you have a rehab regimine in mind

3-D is more addictive than crack! Or so I've heard:zip:. You will have so much fun you will find that each week at work is longer waiting for the next shoot! You can just go and shoot for fun the first couple of times and take your range finder if you want. Or atleast that is the way they do things here. But you can't shoot for score. If you want to shoot for score the Hunter Class is a good class to start in. But like Doc said if the club usues IBO rules you have to have 4" vanes or longer. The 2" blazers will bump you up into the MBR or Male Bowhunter Release class. Approx. Max distance of 45 yds. Good luck to you. Don't worry about score for the first time out. You'll find that most of the people that you meet will be very helpful and very cordial.
